Book and video, to be used as video-book
By Wendy
Peter Scott is well-known for his two other books (Perl Medic and Perl Debugged). This book is in itself a very nice idea. The book itself contains less than 60 pages, which are mostly some very short educational texts and some lists of things (like a list of online tutorials and a very long list of Perl-modules than can be obtained on CPAN, the main Perl-repository of programs that have been developed by the Perl community).

The most important part is the DVD, with over 4 hours of video tutorials. Peter Scott shows that he is a good teacher. The 8 chapters have clear titles. Scott introduces Perl elegantly and takes the starting programmer by the hand, helping to find Perl.

The beginning is easy. The more difficult parts follow soon and Scott handles those well. Each chapter consists of two parts: the first part is an introduction, where you can see Scott himself. The second part is a presentation, with computer screens added to them, mostly of the editor and the program output. At the end, the new Perl programmer knows the basics, knows how to start programming.

I did (and still do) have a big problem with the videos on the DVD. I am a Linux user and use movie players like VLC, Totem and Mplayer. The last one has the quirkiest interface, but is the only one with which I can view the videos without a nasty flashing of the video. I have no idea what causes the problem, I tried to change the codecs, I tried to convert the videos, no help. It is not a know problem (well, it is not mentioned on Scott's website or the website of Addison-Wesley).

For those new to Perl, excellent
By Gregory L. Firth
I'm self-taught and have been using Perl on and off for years. It would have been of great help to have something like this when I was starting out. Mr. Scott covers scalars, arrays, hashes, subroutines, basic I/O, and a strong intro to Regular Expressions (Regex). The material also includes a number of fine points that use to confuse the heck out of me such as the hidden (and pervasive) $_, context evaluation, pattern matching, and even the greedy nature of the regex engine.

Basic stuff with very solid instruction. If he ever comes out with a follow-on package, I am definitely up for it.

Many a student will find this the perfect refresher or lab course
By Midwest Book Review
The home video/book lesson plan that is PERL FUNDAMENTALS is a top pick for any perl programmer and comes from a Perl author who tackles the basics of Perl 5. Newcomers to the program receive a clear, graded progressive series of lessons moving from basic introduction to intermediate concepts, with the DVD reinforcing written explanation. Many a student will find this the perfect refresher or lab course.
