Important Source For Journalists

As a business magazine editor I find we frequently have to evaluate statistical material. My writers are not uniformly prepared in statistical analysis. They don't have to be. Basic Statistical Analysis (8th Edition) is more than a textbook. We use Dr. Sprinthall's book as our interpreter. We find it authoritative but more importantly, accessible. The author is an effective communicator who allows us to understand the techniques we need without the eye glazing numbness of having to enter a world of baffling jargon, impenetrable examples, and little Greek letters lying on their sides waiting to bite us. I am glad we came upon his works.
By the way, you definitely DO NOT need to be a math major to understand what Sprinthall's up to in this book. I recommend this edition of Statistical Analysis particularly to business and political writers along with every newsroom in the world. Anyone who is wrestling with assertions which are purported to be "proven" by an accompanying body of statistiical "evidence" should have this book on their shelves. Think of it as self-defense.

Very clearly written for beginner, but incorrect end-of-chapter answers

I bought a printed version of this book from Amazon for a statistics course that I'm taking. The book provides clear explanations of concepts, and plenty of example formulas. It gets an A for writing style and concept coverage.
But the end-of-chapter odd numbered answers provided in the back of the book are incorrect. It's not just one or two answers, it is the majority of them. Our instructor provided us with the even numbered answers (likely provided in the instructor resources) and those answers are incorrect as well. See Chapters 5 & 6 if you want to check for yourself. For a book that costs over $136 on Amazon, and $177 from the publisher (Pearson), it could at least be accurate so students can verify their answers.
Pearson and the author need to publish errata on the Pearson website and provide the correct solutions to the end-of chapter problems.

This is the worst textbook I have ever had. Previous editions might have been fine but the 9th Edition is full of errors. Too many problems do not match up with the answers from the back of the book. In class the professor had to give of the correct answers before we could even do the homework. This could lead to total confusion and hours of trying to get an answers that matches up with those in the back of the book, only to find out that you have been doing it right all along, but it was the book that was inconsistent. On the first SPSS example problem in chapter 12 the book tells you exactly how to type it in, but the picture of how to plug the data into SPSS is not consistent with what the first paragraph tells you, so the answer it give you does not match up with the first set of data. When you are dealing with math you expect the book to be mostly error free so you can learn what you are doing, but this book is full of errors and it is a shame that I had to waste my money on this mess of a book. The only thing the 9th Edition is worth is to keep you warm by throwing it in a fire.
