Systems Engineering - A Good Introduction

Good introductory book on Systems Engineering, covering most important subjects (Introduction to Sys. Eng., Conceptual, Preliminary and Detailed Design and Development, and a nice chapter on Engineering Management).

In some figures it presents a process for engineering a system, along with explanation and examples. I enjoyed A LOT this approach.

Presents information on standards (MIL-STD-499B, IEEE-1220, EIA-632) and a brief overview of SEI's Capability Maturity Model for Systems Engineering (CMM-SE).

What I liked is that it is "straight to the point" and an easy to read book.

Downside: it has no exercises at the end of each chapter.

I recommend it for both students and practitioners.

About the Author

Dragomir Radev is the program chair of the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO). He has been the head coach of the US teams at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) since 2007. He holds a PhD from Columbia University and is currently a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Information, and Linguistics at the University of Michigan and an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. He also serves as the secretary of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and is an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Distinguished Scientist.

The authors make it easy to get up and running in new applications by adapting the code for the examples, and by being able to access the details of key functions within these pages. This book is accompanied by additional web-based support at http://www.functionaldata.org for applying existing functions and developing new ones in either language. The companion 'fda' package for R includes script files to reproduce nearly all the examples in the book including all but one of the 76 figures.

Jim Ramsay is Professor Emeritus at McGill University and is an international authority on many aspects of multivariate analysis.� He was President of the Statistical Society of Canada in 2002-3 and holds the Society’s Gold Medal for his work in functional data analysis. His statistical work draws on his collaboration with researchers in biomechanics, chemical engineering, climatology, ecology, economics, human biology, medicine and psychology.

Giles Hooker is Assistant Professor of Biological Statistics and Computational Biology at Cornell University. His research interests include statistical inference in nonlinear dynamics, machine learning and computational statistics.

Spencer Graves is an engineer with a PhD in Statistics and over 15 years experience using S-Plus and R to analyze data in a broad range of applications. He has made substantive contributions to several CRAN packages including ‘fda’ and ‘DierckxSpline.’

Excellent

The book maintains the high standards of "FDA" and "AFDA", and does a great job on the Matlab/R side of things. (Kudos to Spencer Graves). Software on James Ramsay's FTP site includes both the tools and extensive usage examples, which is very helpful. Also available off the site are a number of presentations discussing FDA, which make for valuable complementary reading. I wish the authors built a user-friendly "landing page" / readme file for their code, and filled in more implementation details ("how do I construct a b-spline?"), but admire the book as it is.

One of the most poorly written technical books I've seen

While the concept and practice of Functional Data Analysis is extremely important this book isn't the way to learn it or to learn to use the Matlab implementation. The book is written almost exclusively using R notation with Matlab functions stuffed in as an afterthought. I admit that I'm not a fan of R but I have many years of experience using Matlab. The examples often fail to define locally what the entries mean or even why you would use specific kinds of entries. Aside from the failings of this book all of the books that have anything to do with Ramsay's input have exactly the same examples. This is the worst possible practice if making the concepts clear is the goal. A few additional simple examples different from the main examples would be extremely helpful. If you know or want to use Matlab to do FDA you are better served by writing your own code and ignoring this particular book.

Philippa Gregory is the author of many bestselling novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, and is a recognized authority on women’s history. Queen Katherine of England and how the great lie changed history

This is the story of Henry VIII's first wife, Katharine of Aragon. It is about her beginning in Spain and continues as she becomes Princess of Wales and then, Queen of England.

It is an amazing story. She is born Catalina of Aragon, youngest daughter of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile. The two managed to run the Moors out of Spain, begin the Inquisition, and unite Aragon and Castile into the realm of Spain. Catalina stays with her mother on the battlefield, learning battlefield strategy and viewing Isabella donning armour and leading the troops into battle. Throughout the narrative, we learn about the great society of the Moors, about their great learning in medicine and science and their tolerance of all religions. Not so the Catholic Isabella and Ferdinand, who drive the Moors and the Jews from Spain and impose Roman Catholic doctrine on all citizens.

Catalina has been promised to Henry VII's oldest son, Arthur, since infancy, in efforts towards a union of Spain and England. She has been raised in the belief that her destiny is to be Queen of England. At the age of 15, she is married in England to Arthur and the two take up residence in Wales, since Arthur is Prince of Wales, next in line for the throne. His father, Henry VII is the first Tudor king. Catalina and Arthur loathe each other at first, but soon fall madly and deeply in love. They are only supposed to meet once a week to begin an heir, but through a secret passage, Arthur goes to Catalina and they make mad, passionate love every night.

But not for long. In the fifth month of their marriage, Arthur develops "the sweats" (unknown disease, but thought to be caused by bad sewage and water, similar to cholera). Within days, he is dead. Philippa Gregory thinks that on his death bed, he extracted a promise from Katharine, which lie would change the course of English history. In any event, fact or fiction, the lie went down in history as fact. "The lie" enables her to marry the second son, Henry, to become Henry VIII and fulfill her destiny as Queen of England.

Katherine is 6 years older than Henry. It takes a few years, during which time she is pursued by the father, Henry VII, and suffers from poverty when she is ignored. But Henry the Younger has quite a crush on his late brother's widow, and finally, they are married.

We know that she was eventually supplanted by Anne Boleyn, but there is a lot of living to do before that time is reached. Henry was not trained to the kingship as was his older brother, Arthur and has been vastly spoiled by his grandmother. He remains vain, selfish, willful and hedonistic to the point where Katherine takes over the running of the kingdom by paying bills and assuming all the necessary duties to keep the court afloat and afford Henry's self-indulgent, extravagant life style.

This is a magnificent story of a queen who knew how to run a court logistically and when Henry was absent with a war against the French, how to man, supply and lead an army against the Scots, and win it.

It is also about her struggles towards motherhood, of babies lost and one, Mary, born. It is a story of her unending, timeless love for Arthur and how she fulfills her destiny to be queen of England through "the lie."

Gregory's narration is juxtaposed through a third person account of historical events and Katherine's private thoughts at every step of development.

This story of Queen Katherine is a compelling narrative from beginning to end. In the concluding passages as Anne Boleyn appears on the scene, we know how it will all turn against Katherine. There is therefore a touch of sadness for this great woman and outstanding queen, as we realize what struggles she has ahead of her. But that cannot dim, the greatness of her achievements.

Oh, How Delicious!

Oh, how delicious! This is historical FICTION. Emphasis on the word "fiction." While it is a historical account of Catalina, princess of Spain who becomes Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife and queen of England, there is liberal artistic license taken.

The facts are the bones of the book; the fiction is the flesh. And author Philippa Gregory, who is one of the leading novelists about this time period, melds the two brilliantly. The book alternates between a third-person story and the first-person thoughts of Catalina/Katherine.

This is the first in a series of novels about the Tudors. The story continues in the next book, "The Other Boleyn Girl," when the Bolelyn family (first Mary and then her sister, Anne) so devastatingly disrupt the marriage of the King Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon and set in motion the birth of the Church of England.

If you enjoy the stories of the Tudors--I find it all quite enthralling--then this is a must-read.

Worst in the series so far

BORING! It's a good thing I read Book 3 and Book 2 (in that order) before reading Book 1 because if I had read this book first I would never ever gotten to any of the other books. It was complete torture reading this book. To think the writer then wrote sequels that were way way more interesting! I am now reading Book 4, I can only hope it's better than Book 1 (I don't think it can be much worse but who knows). Part of the problem is that there's hardly any interaction. There's an ENDLESS amount of time spent of the central character thinking to herself (whole sections wasted on her repeating the same thoughts over and over and over). This is a work of fiction, the writer could have come up with a lot of more interesting options. And the endless mention of Arthur siiiigh okay, we got it, she adored him and was just doing what he made her promise, why spend sooooo much time going over that.
