Less informative than disorienting

I wanted to like this book. As you begin reading, Pomeranz and Topik seem to have good intentions, and indeed present interesting information throughout, but nevertheless their style is confusing and haphazard. Though they purport to organize by topic and chronologically, they barely manage the first and completely fail at the second. Of course, all of history and particularly economics overlaps to significant degrees, but this book only made a denser web of this inter-relatedness. The authors jump from topic to topic, and (very annoyingly) repeat concepts which they have already discussed once, twice, even three times in earlier sections. Partly illustrating the fact that no chronological order is followed is the note in the introduction that says the second section discusses "the role of violence in capital accumulation and market formation," and "Chapter 5 examines the role of transportation improvements in linking up distant markets and intensifying trade" (xiv). However, the table of contents lists Chapter 2 as the one which discusses transportation, while Chapter 5 talks about violence. If even the authors have difficulties organising their topics, there is little hope that the reader will be able to follow their organisation. Though some of their information was interesting and relevant to world history, it was presented in such a disorienting fashion that little could be gained from the reading. Additionally, I felt as though the authors made significant exaggerations and generalisations on some topics, particularly related to the economics of drugs, the morals of pirates, and the views of foods like potatoes.

You will want to collect each edition

I actually came across this book in a used bookstore. It was nestled among exotic history books. I read the introduction and fell in love. Later I read other peoples reviews and some people pointed out a few faux pas in the second edition I decided also to buy a copy in the third edition. That is when I found out that the authors it changed the focus of the book to being more on the 20th century and 21st century. This book being more geared I would suppose it is a textbook needed to adjust to its potential audience. So some articles were removed others were incorporated. I suggest if you have an earlier version to keep it; however you also need a newer edition for corrections and changes in focus.

For my new copy I chose the electronic Kindle format. The drawback is that it does not contain links to references inside the book so you have to know how to get to those particular locations if you want to read more on the subject that you are currently reading. It is quite annoying. There is however a go to button which will take you to the beginning of each section. I am one of those people that cannot stand to scribble in books as when time changes and interest, scribbling can be annoying. On the Kindle edition you can make notes and remove them at will. One great advantage is that it has text-to-speech which allows you to listen in the background if you are mobile or have other visual imperatives such as taking care of cats.

I bought this book primarily to learn about different commodities and their trades. There are many books that specialize in individual commodity such as coffee, tea, and salt. There are others dedicated to plants of which I learned about Wardian Cases (Green cargoes. by Anne. Dorrance [19450]), and some dedicated to dyes such as "A Perfect Red: Empire, Espionage, and the Quest for the Color of Desire by Amy Butler Greenfield." While in the process of gleaning this information I have come to appreciate the other aspects of this book including "society, culture, and world economy."

I assume this book is used as a textbook somewhere due to the nature of its organization. Information mostly comes from a column from "World trade magazine."

I hope you have as much fun as I have had reading this and I am now working on the abbreviated bibliography and hope one day that Kenneth Pomeranz and Steve Topik will write a more in-depth book.

Eye-opening view into the quantum realm

It is easy to see the beauty of mathematical equations that model the reality around us. But accompanying that math, if you are really curious, an interpretation or visualization on why it works that way is required. With classical physics, interpretations are easier. Even general relativity can be grasped with analogies (e.g. the heavy marble on the rubber sheet representing gravity around a planet). But quantum physics has always defied a plausible interpretation for me. All the popular interpretations (e.g. collapsing wave functions or splitting universes because a scientist made a measurement) sounded so arbitrary and kooky to me. This book discusses a new and completely satisfying interpretation to quantum theory and provides answers to the "quantum riddles".

This book starts with an excellent introduction into what is so unusual about the quantum realm and why it has traditionally defied interpretations. Next Dr. Kastner introduces her Possibilist Transactional Interpretation (PTI) using figures and analogies (there is no math in this book). Accepting the interpretation is still very difficult partly because the mathematics it is explaining predict that bizarre things can and do happen in this world. The interpretation is used to help visualize and explain classic quantum puzzles such as Einstein's "spooky action at a distance" and single particles seemingly taking multiple paths at the same. As the layers are peeled back, Dr. Kastner applies the interpretation to other aspects of quantum theory, physics in general, and then on to some metaphysical concepts (e.g. how space and time are borne out around us and even free will!). The book is an easy and enjoyable read while providing an completely eye-opening view into the quantum realm and the "unseen reality".

Complex but Fantastic Book

This is a an excellent follow-up to Kastner's 2012 book. Whereas that volume explored the mathematics of her expansion of the Transactional Interpretation, this popular book explains in graspable terms what is going on at the quantum level in the issuance of offer and confirmation waves and the virtual particles that give rise to these quantum exchange processes. The process is shown to produce what we can experience through the sense world. I find that Kastner's interpretation of quantum theory can explain some of what we see in relativistic quantum theory very clearly (for example, offer waves and confirmation waves contain complex numbers and so the collapse we expect to see in quantum experiments is represented by the imaginary parts of each type of wave negating each other mathematically when multiplied). Her full interpretation makes us rethink the physical world by seeing it as a field of events, which comprise actions and potential actions that are available to arise. This picture of a multidimensional sea of possibilities as reality is very different from a uni-directional world that hums along more or less predictably and her book is revolutionary for presenting it.

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

Reality is much richer than we usually notice as we go about our mundane affairs. But as the author of this book demonstrates, "things are not always what they seem."

This book isn't just a refresher on quantum mechanics. It provides a new theoretical perspective called the Possibilist Transactional Interpretation, or PTI. (This was certainly new to me at least, and I think it will be to most readers.) Kastner uses images, metaphors and carefully-crafted stories to guide the reader on a splendidly executed tour of this approach, moving through the quantum reality to everyday reality. She shows how the "riddles" of the quantum world (such as wave/particle duality, nonlocality and more) can be unraveled and made sense of.

The reading of this book resulted in an inward deliverance. Revealing self-love, and desperately satisfying the wanting for more of the self discovery before the Lord. The bringing into the way of light and clear direction out of darkness. By revelation of the Holy Spirit's discipline of the "self" to the extent that I NO longer live but Christ lives in me. Suggest reading and take notes to facilitate the recall of the underline message. Which is being ready for God's service.

you'd best get the book

This falls into the category of "if you must you must." I've written many papers in APA, and if you have as well, Turabian format will have very strange differences that make no sense what-so-ever. Still, if you must use Turabian, you'd best get the book. I found APA easy to figure out to the point that I never cracked the book, so I figured Turabian would be the same way. I was wrong and have been dinged a lot for it. Do not let yourself believe you do not need this book because APA was easy. Turabian is not easy. It is confusing. And the websites on it are not helpful. Buy the book.

I bought this book because I was supposed to use it for a class. At the same time, I don't feel like it provided me with any useful tips about how to be a better writer. The problem I had with the book is that it was too impersonal. It would have been better to have a more informal book that would tell you more directly the kinds of things you can do to improve thesis writing The book also contains ridiculous numbers of examples for how to cite sources. At the end of the day, I couldn't even easily figure out how to cite anything.
