If you're an accounting major and having trouble with those other textbooks on Cost Accounting, this book is a great addition to your library. It explains the theories and works the problems in simple text. I had no problem adding this to help me with my cost accounting course.

Good Book, even after so many years

This is excellent book in the past, and if I considered it's usefulness today, it is still a very good book. You will be amazed it is still very relevant. What is missing are activity based costing, target costing and just-in-time accounting, with the last only explained in brief. It does not cover concepts of balanced scorecard or the like which is performance management and is only popular after this book is published. It is good supplement to any cost management or accounting textbooks because this provide the solutions to the questions, whereas textbooks don't. It helps those studying for financial accounting as well with the journal entry examples.

Used it in college, now using it for the CPA.

I purchased this a few years ago when taking cost accounting in school and now as I prepare for the CPA I must say, this guide is still a fantastic companion. This subject can get pretty crazy considering there is tons of theory, costing methods, classifications, analysis etc... This outline cuts straight through the fluff.

In short, each of the chapters are presented as follows a) brief explanation of the concept (typically a few paragraphs and bullet points) b) example/s of the concept c) various problems d) solutions.

About the Author

Graham St John is a Research Associate at the University of Queensland’s Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, and was recently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Interactive Media and Production at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, and an SSRC Residential Fellow at the School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, New Mexico. His recent book Technomad: Global Raving Countercultures was published by Equinox in 2009. His edited collections include Victor Turner and Contemporary Cultural Performance (Berghahn 2008), Rave Culture and Religion (Routledge, 2004), and FreeNRG: Notes From the Edge of the Dance Floor (Common Ground, 2001). About the Author

Sue Cloninger is a California native who, after living several places in the U.S. and Germany, has settled in upstate New York for the past three decades. She is a professor of psychology at the Sage Colleges in Troy and Albany, New York, and also teaches online through Empire State College. Currently she chairs the Institutional Research Board (IRB) at The Sage Colleges. Her graduate work at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, under a National Science Foundation fellowship, focused on personality and motivation. Other interests include topics at the interface of personality and social psychology, such as the self. She’s proud of her son John, an architect. In her spare time, she enjoys music, plays, and gardening.

Badly written

Having used this textbook for the undergraduate Personality course I taught for 1 semester, I could safely say it was very poorly written. The chapters are not organized to facilitate learning and some of the information contained therein was not necessary. The writing style is rather dull and as my students have told me numerous times, it failed to hold their interest. I should have reviewed it more carefully before choosing, but relied on others who had taught from it before me. Don't buy this - most other books on the market are better alternatives!

Understanding Persons

Thee was originally a bit of a mix-up at the beginning before I got the textbook but after I got it I see why my instructor chose it for this course. It is very readable and easy to find specific parts of each chapter with the headings and the way it is put together. I have read at least half already and it is one of those many books you sometimes have to keep for your personal collection.....

This book was a required book for a Psychology class that I am taking. I found it to be hard to follow because when studying certain people's theories the book would go off on tangents talking about ways to refute these same theories and all I needed to do was study the theory its self. There was a lot of back and forth material that made it a confusing read and made me more confused than was neceaasry.

About the Author
Andrew J. Nelson is Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Oregon's Lundquist College of Business, where he teaches courses in strategy and entrepreneurship. He received his Ph.D. and B.A. degrees from Stanford University and his M.Sc. from Oxford University. Prior to joining the University of Oregon, he held the post of Lecturer in management science and engineering at Stanford University. �Dr. Nelson is well known for his research into university-based entrepreneurship

Richard C. Dorf is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Management at the University of California, Davis. He is author of Introduction to Electric Circuits�(7th Ed.), Modern Control Systems�(10th Ed.), Handbook of Electrical Engineering�(3rd Ed.), Handbook of Engineering�(2nd Ed.), and Handbook of Technology Management. He is the co-founder of six technology firms and was recently elected a Fellow Member in The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Society.

Tom Byers is Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University and founder of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, which is dedicated to accelerating high-technology entrepreneurship education and creating scholarly research on technology-based firms. After receiving his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, Tom spent over a decade in leadership positions in technology companies including Symantec Corporation. Expensive but very comprehensive

Technology Ventures is a book that I'll be keeping for a long time. It is a bit expensive (it's a text book, so this is not unexpected), but unlike many other books, you'll probably keep this one.

It covers the basics of launching a business, and it discusses legal issues, marketing, and HR in an engaging format.

Who should read this book:
If you have an academic background in technology, and want to launch a new business, this book will be perfect for you

Who should not read this book:
If you are looking for a quick, light read, this book will be too much for you. Also, if you're looking for information about social media marketing tactics, this book won't really help you

What I like about this book is that it really provides you with everything you need to know about launching a technology company. It covers everything, from the conception stage, to the legal issues. It is taught to Stanford students, and with good reason; its a very good book.

Buy this only if you have to

The title says it all - if it is a required book for your class then get it. I got this beginning of 2012 when I finishing my senior year in college. As an electrical engineering major, I referred to my textbooks a great deal. I actually kept most of my textbooks from undergrad (I may be a bit of a hoarder), but not this one. The reason was simple, I didn't find this book to be particularly useful. I took an entrepreneurship course that required this book. This book has very basic econ mixed in with real world examples. It will talk about strategies of a start-up business and then discuss how amazon/google/p&g/etc. do so well. Honestly it is like a blended in version of econ and wikipedia, so not so good.

I feel that most textbooks bought on this site are school related so you have to get it. But if there is a choice, I would go with a different book.

Layout is weird and text is hard to read

Well the layout is a little weird. Not like normal textbooks but it is broken up by main sections then by subsections and I honestly didn't read much more than the 3rd or 4th chapter because of the way it was written. The text is a light blue color which makes it somewhat hard to read for long periods of time. Starts to blend in with the white paper.

The content was dry and nothing I hadn't really learned in marketing or entrepreneurship classes.

EDIT: I guess the 4th edition had black ink. This review is for the 3rd addition.

About the Author
Patrick von Aderkas is a professor in the biology department of the University of Victoria. He has degrees in botany from the University of Guelph and Manchester. His career reflects a broad interest in experimental embryogenesis of ferns and gymnosperms, including hormone physiology, molecular biology, and proteomics (the large-scale study of proteins).

Helped organize a million facts into a logical argument

I struggle with organizing lots of facts into a logical argument. This book really helped me organize a million facts into a topic, subject, title, and logical argument. Definitely recommend!
