Lucien Musset is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Caen. He has written extensively on the period and has made a major contribution to Viking and Norman studies. He is editor of the Bulletin de la Societe des Antiquaries de Normandie.

Richard Rex is University Lecturer in Church History at the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge. He is also Director of Studies in History at Queens' College, Cambridge.

A masterpiece about a masterpiece

If one cannot see the Bayeux Tapestry in person (and I have been privileged enough to have done so), this book may well be the next best thing. Beautiful, two-page spreads highlight the colour, the detail and the magnificence of the what is perhaps the most famous tapestry in the world.

The Bayeux Tapestry itself is over 70 yards long - that is long enough to be hung from the window of a twenty-story building and still be able to touch the ground. Threads of wool embroidered onto the precious linen are brilliantly transformed into a work of art - were this an abstract representation or simple story-telling device, the work would still be famous and remarkable. Yet it has the added advantage of combining unparalleled craftsmanship with a pivotal story in history - the tale of the Norman Conquest, the last successful invasion of Britain.

The story on Tapestry begins in 1064, with the English king Edward the Confessor, much loved and respected, trying to ensure a peaceful succession. The next two years would see other events transpire, ending with the death of King Harold, shot by an arrow in the Battle of Hastings. The details are fascinating, including the appearance of a comet (which turned out to be one of the periodic appearances of Halley's Comet) shortly after Harold's coronation - comets in this period were usually seen as signs of foreboding and doom, and certainly that was the case for Harold.

William the Conqueror is certainly the hero of this Tapestry, and the origins of the Tapestry are still a mystery. There are historical events throughout the Tapestry, and Musset's text looks at most of the Tapestry in 58 sections, going into great detail about what is presented in the embroidery. For example, Harold is shown dying with an arrow through the eye - history does confirm this type of death, and an early engraving of the Tapestry doesn't show the arrow wound for Harold, but given that perjurers and frauds were thought to die of wounds to the eyes, the later addition of the arrow may have been a propaganda move to help justify William's rightful claim to the throne.

Lucien Musset was a professor at the University of Caen, and had a life-long love affair with the Bayeux Tapestry, spending nearly 50 years in study and reflection. This book represents a stunning life-long labour of love, and one that is magnificent in both word and visual form. Musset's text develops historical, artistic and social themes for each of the sections, and adds a richness to the experience of surveying the Tapestry. It is not to be missed.

Wonderful

This is a marvelous book on the Bayeux Tapestry. Each frame has its own page with a copy os the tapestry, the Latin original and English translation provided. A very good history of the tapestry, comparisons to other tapestries and even the type of stitch used is provided. I bought the book to prepare for a visit to the actual tapestry in 2010 and I couldn't be better pleased with it.

THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY could also have been featured in our history shelf; but it's reviewed here for its appeal and importance to fiber artists as well. The Tapestry is one of the most notable achievements of the Norman Romanesque period, surviving intact for over nine centuries when even cities have fallen. It was entrusted by Napoleon to the citizens of Bayeux and today is displayed in a local gallery. The history of 11th century England and Normandy is surveyed along with the artistic importance of the Tapestry in a title which doesn't intend to revolutionize the study of the piece, but to survey reliable scholarship on the subject. Chapters take a scene-by-scene approach and analyze both historical and artistic elements of the Tapestry while Richard Rex's translation provides smooth enlightenment.

I really enjoy Ms. Garner's exciting young adult fantasy/paranormal trilogy, The Gateway. If you would like to check out my review of the first book, Gateway, click here.
In this second book, we see that Ember actually has a little more confidence in herself and is a vital part to the Institute in Los Angeles , even if the Elders don't like it.
I like the fact that our main heroine, Ember, has a lot more going on. She isn't the broken fragile girl we meet in the first book, but more sure of herself. This is not to say she still doesn't fear the demons; hell, I don't blame her for still being afraid of something that can take over her mind and freewill like it did. Ember has grown a lot but we can still glimpse that scared little girl too. To me, this makes her more realistic and a lot more likable character.
Speaking of characters, I love all the supporting ones in this story, good and bad. The antagonists are true evil and yet...you can't help but enjoy their view on the world. We have a lot of different types of demons that are explained in this story and it always brings to mind, Supernatural. (I know, I know...I tend to compare books to T.V. shows. Don't judge me.)
Alexander is a mystery, even though I found myself questioning his motives the entire time. He is a charismatic man and you can see potential through his eyes.
Taren is a great YA boyfriend. He is your typical strong, loyal, protective and gorgeous male lead. I think he is good for Ember, especially being the one that found her in the first book.
Ms. Garner does know how to write a steamy sexy scene for YA eyes, just enough "ummph" to make you sweat, yet it doesn't cross the line into no man's land.
The main plot is basically the same as in the first book and at first I thought this would get a little boring but instead Ms. Garner inserted different twists into the book that made it even more exciting. I did feel like some minor plot lines were left unsettled, especially having to do with the marks fading.
I was at times, wanting to scream at Ember to think; actually think about what was happening! But even through this, I still felt this strong connection with Ember and I like her as our female lead.
But my most favorite character in this book? Kat! This girl totally rocks! She is funny, smart, sexy, a kick ass Guardian, and yes...she is snarky!(My coveted word for those I truly treasure)
Oh and of course there is a cliffhanger that will have you pulling your hair out by the roots but I completely understand why it had to happen...but still.
There is a lot of grammatical errors in this story though. I usually try to look past these but there was a few times I got a little distracted by these mistakes. Thankfully, though, the plot is strong enough to keep my interest in this story.
I can't wait till book three when we get to meet Cole, in person, and I have a feeling he will play a major part (and perhaps love interest for one of Ember's shy friends?) in the finality of the Gateways. I just hope he and Taren will get along...
Update: I did find out from the author that the copy I received was more of ARC copy but the final copy that is available for purchase and download is free of these errors. Awesome!

Fantastic Second Book!

This book was amazing! I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it.

Chasm begins immediately when Book 1 ends. Ember is dealing with the trauma of killing the Root Demon at her gateway and is getting ready to travel to each gateway. She hasn't left the sanctuary of the Institute until her birthday. Something traumatic happens to her while she's out, yet she still plans on leaving to go overseas to visit the gateways all over the world.

While out traveling, the traumatic event that she barely escapes come to fruition while traveling on a train. The story just gets even better from here! She meets a man who can teach her these things, but can we really trust him? Can she? Does she even have a choice?

Christina Garner takes us on a journey of Ember, trying to discover what she really wants regarding her true nature and how she can access the powers that keep eluding her.

Looking forward to Book 3!!

Really like the way this book has you feeling about and for the characters.Lots of mind games and plot changes. I hope book three is almost done....I cant wait to find out what happens next!

I loved this book

I loved this book. Which surprised me because I really don't follow horse racing and don't know much about it. However I did watch one of these races and fell in love with American Pharoah. I enjoyed this book so much I read it twice. I recommend this book to anybody who loves horses and racing. Very well written and interesting.

A must-read for horse lovers everywhere, this brilliantly written book will leave you spellbound as you read the story about the amazing horse that is American Pharaoh!

When I began reading the book, I knew that American Pharoah was the 2015 winner of the Kentucky Derby but I did not know that the horse was only the 12th in history to be the winner of the Triple Crown and the very first in US history - a magnificent achievement, indeed!

The book is extremely well-written and a real page-turner. It makes the reader long to meet the incredible American Pharoah in person one day.

I would highly recommend this fabulous book to anyone - not only racing horse lovers, but anyone wishing to get inspired.
