I enjoyed this book very much..it was right up my alley "sort to speak". I also liked the way Marc Salem explained in detailed how one can not only empower our minds, but to also look at things from a different perspective.I especially liked the chapter relating to "non verbal" communication. Well written and ensightful.

About the Author
Jacques Sandulescu (1928–2010) was born in Romania and was arrested by soldiers of the occupying Soviet Red Army in January 1945, at age sixteen, because he looked big and strong enough to work. After his escape from Russia, he made his way to the New World, where he was a pro heavyweight fighter, interpreter in the US Army and the UN, jazz bar owner, actor (you saw him say "Is that your purse?" in "Trading Places," "Liberty!" in "Moscow on the Hudson," and "What the hell is ANSKY?" in a memorable New York Yankees commercial), and author. More than 50 years after his escape, Jacques returned to the Donbas region where he'd been a prisoner, a story told in the epilogue of this book.

the most exciting, unreal, inspiring story of survival and escape I have ever read

When I first encountered Jacques Sandulescu, I was a pasty college kid whose idea of exertion involved a highlighter and a textbook. Jacques was twice my age, a giant, rock hard, with hands that swallowed pens whole. Romania was deep in his past, as was his career as a professional boxer; in l968, when we met, he was a Greenwich Village bar owner.

Like Big Daddy Lipscomb --- the legendary giant of a football player who used to help opponents up "so the children won't think Big Daddy's mean" --- Jacques was a calming force in every room he entered. You couldn't imagine trouble erupting with him around; he was that big and strong. And, at the same time, peaceful --- he had the kind of calm only people who have passed through fire seem to know.

It wasn't until I read his book that I understood the horror Jacques survived.

"I was arrested in Brasov on my way to school," his book begins. And right there your stomach sinks. Because you know what's coming: a terrible story, told in unadorned prose.

Well, brace yourself, you're about to be devastated.

As "Donbas" opens, Jacques is 16 years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall, 180 pounds. He's the youngest person in the box car filled with Romanians that the Russians are shipping east in January of 1945. But his youth vanishes fast when he watches guards execute some would-be escapees. On one hand, he envies their death: "no more cold, misery, hunger." On the other, he wants to live. Which means he'll have to escape.

This is a book about noticing everything, paying sharp attention, looking for an opening. His first conclusion: Don't try to escape in winter, don't think you can get out of Russia without knowing Russian.

But after a few days of working in the coal mines of Donbas (now considered part of the Ukraine), his thoughts turn from escape to survival. The work is wet and cold. A cave-in could come at any time. Exhaustion, exposure, hunger --- death comes in many forms here.

I have never read an account of work in a mine that made me so claustrophobic. I found myself reading faster, as if getting to the end of a particularly horrible shift would provide some relief. But it didn't --- above ground, there were sadistic guards and icy winds. "Many prisoners died," Jacques reports matter-of-factly. "Over half the camp. Four hundred and fifty weak and sick weren't suffering any more."

Jacques is comparatively well off. He is strong and uncomplaining, a good worker. He gets privileges --- when he goes to nearby homes for dinner, it's a delight to read as he eats and eats and eats. But he's never fooled; there's always a power-mad guard around the corner. And one does beat him so badly he almost dies. I think even a pacifist would agree.

After two and a half years, his luck runs out. Jacques is trapped in a cave-in and rescued only by a friend's heroic efforts. He fears his legs will be amputated. It's winter, but so what --- he must escape. His legs are running with pus, he is a mass of sores, but he slips onto a train, hides in an open coal car and begins the slow, freezing ride to the West.

Books like this have a built-in handicap --- we know the author survived. Only the best of the breed make us forget that there's a happy ending. And this is the best; reading these pages, you will feel cold and hungry, raging with fever, wet and dispirited. But mostly, you will feel Jacques Sandulescu's spirit, his unyielding insistence on life, life in free air, life at all costs. After you put his book down, you will, literally, take a deep breath.

What a Story!

I grew up during the Cold War. In our history classes we learned about the Jewish Holocaust but we were never told about Stalins Holocaust and his practice of enslaving anyone & everyone for hard labor. Millions died in the Gulags & mines. This story is about one young boys determination to escape and how through hard work & the kindness of others he is finally able to escape. His story is one of guts & love. I recommend this to anyone who wants a birds eye view of what Stalin brought upon his own people. Sad & inspiring at the same time.

Precisely what it claims to be

This book is precisely what it claims to be: a collection of 4 IELTS tests with answers. There is no CD-ROM (so if you want to do the listening part you need to also purchase the CD).

In other words, there are no grammatical rules explained, no ramping-up activities, no tips for the actual test, and no strategies on how to optimize the performance in the 4 parts of the test. For all these reasons, this book is absolutely not enough for passing the actual exam.

Even if your grammar is stellar (and you need no book about it) and your listening skills are wonderful (and you need no CD-ROM), you will still need to learn the best strategies in that the IELTS exam format places *heavy* time constraints on you! I suggest "Action plan for IELTS" for finding some neat strategies.

Furthermore, I find the tips inside "Step up to IELTS" just great. A student needs to know (for example) that, as far as what the IELTS examiners are after, it is better to try to use a complex sentence and fail at it than write/speak in simple sentences.

A really fun story that develops its themes quite nicely

Dorm Room Secrets (Going to College as a Girl), the latest transformation tale from Courtney Captisa & Claire Bear, is an interesting sort of story. It's largely a realistic sort of transgender fantasy, but one with a very unwilling participant at its heart.

Kenneth is an average lazy, underachieving teenager, perfectly content to just hang out and play video games. Down to his last hope, he's initially excited when an acceptance letter arrives from Pepper State University, but furious to find it addressed to Kaitlyn. Almost immediately, his mother starts pressuring him to redecorate his bedroom for a visit from for his younger cousin Emily, going so far as to send him shopping for things like pink bed sheets, maxi-pads, and "38D bras in white, black, pink and something fun." At the same time, he finds he's losing weight (which is not a problem) and that his nipples are becoming swollen and sensitive (which is a problem).

How this is all connected is the central mystery, which I won't go so far as to spoil for you, but I will say really enjoyed the way Courtney and Claire develop the transformation and reveal the truth behind it. As we find out later, there is a larger sort of coordinated effort behind the situation, but that's not the focus of the story . . . although I would love to see it explored further. Certain aspects of it are exaggerated or accelerated, but not to a ridiculous degree, and it's all done for narrative effect.

There are some sexual scenes to the story, but this is not a work of erotica. Instead, those scenes are used to initially establish Kenneth as a normal, straight, sexually active young man. Later on, they're used to demonstrate his acceptance, and to explore his exploration of a new gender and a new life. They may be a little more explicit than some fans expect, but they are fun, tasteful scenes that really do add something to the story. In fact, a few of them are almost romantic in nature, and I think readers will agree they're precisely what we hoped to see from Kenneth/Kaitlyn.

For those readers who are sensitive to these things, there are a few editing issues that I'm sure a final round of proofreading would catch. Nothing major, but they are distracting in a few spots, especially where the wrong character's name is used, or where a word is missing. Don't let that stop you, however, as Dorm Room Secrets is a really fun story that develops its themes quite nicely.

Courtney is a master at storytelling. I think this was the first full story of hers that I read. She had me hooked after the first chapter. I love how the main character is completely unaware of what is going on, but accepts the changes anyhow.

Framing Tips for Every Task

Material Movement for Walls

Locate wall framing so that once the wall is built, it can be raised into position as close to where it finally goes as possible.

Spread the headers, trimmers, cripples, and sills as close to their final position as possible.

You can use your leg to stabilize the studs you are spreading. Stabilize them with one arm and one leg to free up your other arm so that you can spread them one at a time. This way you won’t have to set them down, then pick them back up to spread them. (See photo.)

Select a straight plate for the top and double plates, and position any crown in the double plate in the opposite direction of the top plate crown. This will help straighten out the wall.�

Nailing Walls

Nail the headers to the studs first. Make sure that they are flush on top and on the ends of the headers.

Nail the trimmers to the studs. Make sure that they are up tight against the bottom of the header and flush with the sides of the stud.

Nail the studs and cripples to the plates. Nail sills to the cripples and the trimmers. Make sure that all the connections are tight and flush.

Squaring Walls

Align the bottom plate so that when it is raised, it will be as close to the final position as possible.

Attach the bottom plate to the floor along the inside chalk line for the wall. Toenail through the bottom plate into the floor so that the sheathing won’t cover the nails. If the wall is in position, it can be nailed on the inside, and the nails can be pulled out after the wall is raised.

Use your tape measure to check the diagonal lengths of the wall.

Move the top part of the wall until the diagonal lengths are equal. Example: If the diagonal measurements are different by one inch, then move the long measure toward the short measure by one half inch diagonal measure. Make sure the measurements are exact.

Once the diagonals are the same, check by measuring the other diagonal.

Temporarily nail the top of the wall so that it will not move while you are sheathing it. Make sure you nail so that your nails won’t be covered by the sheathing.

Ok, but not that great for a non-framer

This is a pretty good book, but lacks simple details. The author assumes you are already a framer, or at least that you have a good bit of knowledge on the craft. For instance, there isn't any instruction on fabricating the corners for walls properly. This would be necessary in order to be able to hang the drywall. He tells you how to lay out the tool storage in a framing van. Really? People can't figure that out on their own? He talks about "crowning" studs. but stops there. Nowhere does he mention how to do this. If you are handy with tools but need to know how to frame up a simple structure, I'd get the Ortho book instead. It's more geared toward the non-professional, once-in-a-while framer like me.

About the Author
Julia Child was born in Pasadena, California. She graduated from Smith College and worked for the OSS during World War II in Ceylon and China, where she met Paul Child. After they were married they lived in Paris, where Ms. Child studied at the Cordon Bleu and taught cooking with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, with whom she wrote the first volume of Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961).
In 1963 Boston’s WGBH launched The French Chef television series, which made Julia Child a national celebrity, earning her the Peabody Award in 1965 and an Emmy in 1966. Her subsequent public television shows—Julia Child & Company (1978), Julia Child & More Company (1980), Cooking with Master Chefs (1993), In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs (1995), Baking with Julia (1996), and her one-on-one collaboration with Jacques P�pin, Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home (1999)—were all accompanied by books of the same names. The Way to Cook, her magnum opus, was published in 1989, and in 2000 she gave us Julia’s Kitchen Wisdom, a distillation of her years of cooking experience. Her memoir, My Life in France, was published posthumously in 2006. She died in 2004.

THE French cookbook, after all these years

Like the famous Julie of "Julie and Julia", a lot of us aspiring amateur cooks tried to work through this book in the 70's. We made a lot of the recipes, including a memorable "Dacquoise" meringue and praline cake for grad school parties. (We eked out a seminar dinner budget to cover the speaker and two or three guests at a restaurant and turned it into dinner for 30 or so by cooking at a faculty member's house. This was our main cookbook for many of those dinners.)

The basics on vegetables are here--maybe a bit plain by today's standards, or sometimes overly complicated (who is going to fight with an artichoke or make a moussaka a la turque steamed in a lining of eggplant skin in a timbale mould) but most of the recipes are well worth the effort.

Book One has main dishes and a few desserts, soups, of course and vegetables. Book Two has more ambitious baking (the infamous Dacquoise) and even baguettes, which still don't come out quite right as American flour has a different ash content and American ovens don't produce steam like professional ovens. The pastry section is particularly good in both; you can learn to make a pate sable or a kind of sugar-cookie like crust that is dead useful for tarts. I've also used the Creme Bavaroise many a time; a lot of work, beating gelatin, cream and carefully unmolding what looks like a simple mousse in a decorative ring mould but is a very elegant dessert that serves quite a few, especially sliced, and plated with fresh berries and a drizzle of sauce. It adapts to many flavors (passion fruit, strawberry, chocolate, mocha) and is one of my favorite classics that you just don't see anymore. The Reine de Saba cake (chocolate almond, under-baked in the center and with a ganache glaze) is equally elegant and again, serves a number of people when sliced and plated elegantly.

This book has the only French Onion Soup recipe I really like. A lot of work (you have to peel and slice a hellacious pile of onions, oh the tears) and when I had this book the first time, there were NO food processors. Even so, with the food processor, it takes a lot of time to cook down and brown those onions and you need REALLY good broth but the result is by far the best onion soup there is. Just writing about it makes me want to go slice onions this very minute.

I can't imagine being without these books, and the packaging is nice, as the originals were two different sized volumes and sit kind of funny on the shelf.

I suppose I should mention that even if you aren't going to make most of these dishes (who can find veal these days?) the book is excellent reading on culinary arts.

Few books have had such a profound influence in their field

There are very few books that have had such a profound effect on their field. This book set is transformative - you will never view cooking food the same way again. I grew up watching Julia Child on my local PBS affiliate with no idea that she was anything other than a local cooking talent with a strange affect. After college, I found a copy of volume one in a used book store and can hear her voice in every recipe, stage of directions, and sage advice.
After many years, my family loves her beef stew - a regular dinner in our home. I despised French Onion soup growing up, but after following her directions it is my favorite.
One criticism of this book is the production. After many years of publishing technology improvements, the lack of photos to explain some butchery techniques makes this set a bit dated if you expect visual guides to some steps. Be patient, re-read, and have confidence. These are spectacular dishes made with simple techniques that even someone who grew up on canned soup and boxed dinners figured out.
If I was trapped on a remote island with only one cooking instructional resource, then this would be my choice. Everything else is a far distant second place.

About the Author
Don Taylor grew up in the auto trimming business: his father was a trimmer, Don is a trimmer, and his two sons were trained as trimmers as they grew up. As an expert author, Don created the Automotive Upholstery Handbook for California Bill’s and has written six other automotive books on engine rebuilding, restoration and paint and body work.

Ron Mangus started his career in 1969, and since then has become famous as the stitcher who creates fabulous interiors. His work has received numerous awards, including "Most Beautiful Roadster" and "Best Interior Award". His interiors and how-to articles featuring his techniques have appeared in many street and hot rod magazines.

Three and a half stars, really...

I finally decided to do something about the half-disintegrated and shockingly smelly interior of my '52 Chevy pickup. Now, the smart thing would have been to hand it off to a professional and pick it up a few weeks later completely done. Unfortunately, the six grand or so it would have cost me is almost as much as the truck's worth. So, perhaps unwisely, I decided to do it myself. It's now 90% finished (see pic) and I have to admit that I owe a large portion of my success to this book. It's undoubtedly the best thing on the market.

Having said that, though, it's far from perfect. The photos are poor quality snapshots that make it hard to see three-dimensional shapes, there are strange omissions, and many of the brand recommendations are downright bizarre.

But instead of waxing rhapsodic about the book's problems, I'm going to use the rest of my review to try to give you the benefit of my hard-won experience. Keep in mind that my project was about as difficult as they get--I had to make everything custom, because my truck didn't have much of an interior when it was originally manufactured. Yours should be easier.

OMISSIONS
This book is obsessed with using chipboard to make complex shapes that can then be upholstered. All very lovely if the shape isn't too complex to wrap smoothly and if this is the look you're going for. In many cases, it's much easier to use fiberglass and body filler to create a paintable custom piece. This is standard practice for virtually everything relating to stereo enclosures (see mine in the photo.) The only reason I can think of that the technique isn't so much as mentioned is that the authors are currently writing a book about it. Check the web for pretty much all the info you need to make whatever you want.

There is no information provided on the tools you'll need, no instruction on sewing, omissions in the information on laying carpet, etc., which (probably intentionally) forces you to read Taylor's Automotive Upholstery Handbook.

WHAT YOU WANT TO AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE
Sewing is hard. And even if, like me, you can con your mother into doing it, then you have seams to deal with and they are brutal to keep straight when you're gluing. Design your interior to keep sewing to a minimum.

I would rather stick my tongue in a hornet's nest than glue in a custom headliner. Nine yards of contact cement-covered material suspended over your head, trying to stick to everything, including your hair. And one mistake, you get to rip it all out. Granted, mine is ridiculously hard due to the acute angles in the back of the cab, but still you should still seriously consider having this done professionally.

BRAND RECOMMENDATIONS
There aren't many in this book, but almost none make sense based on my experience.

Glue is all important--the difference between an easy five-minute job and an endless disaster. The only advice given (actually in the Automotive Upholstery Handbook as I recall) is to buy the most expensive stuff you can find. This is just as stupid as it sounds. I tried Stick-it, Tac-it, and Duo-something, among others. All with horrible results. DO NOT USE ANYTHING THAT ISN'T MADE BY 3M!!! Note the cheesy use of caps and multiple exclamation marks. I'm serious here.

Q-pads: This is a messy, expensive, and obsolete asphalt sound deadener. Use RAAM-Mat or go to sounddeadenershowdown if you want to really geek out on the subject.

Mellowhide: This is nice vinyl and I used it based on their recommendation, but it's hard to find and apparently it doesn't store well in non-climate controlled situations, prompting my supplier (the excellent Larry Dennis company) to quit carrying it. It's probably an off-gassing issue and I haven't had a problem with the installed interior, but if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't take the chance.

OTHER TIPS
Foam dulls razorblades incredibly fast and a dull blade can ruin hours' worth of work in the blink of an eye. Figure three feet of cutting in 1/4 foam before you have to throw the blade away.

I made the mistake of using glue in rattle cans. Buy a gallon of the stuff and spray it with a primer gun. It's far cheaper and will give you a more consistent coating with no globs that might telegraph through your material.

This is not a science, it's an art. Buy some cheap materials and play around before trying something that's actually going to go in your car. It's not complicated, but it can be kind of subtle.

That little 3" sander you see them using in the pictures is your best friend. It's called a polisher, though. Searching the Net for "3 inch sander" won't get you anywhere.
