About the Author

Jerry W. Gilley is Professor and Chair of the Organizational Performance and Change and Human Resource Studies programs at Colorado State University. Previously on the faculty at Iowa State University, Western Michigan University, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he also served as Principal and Director of Organization and Professional Development for Mercer Human Resource Consulting. Currently serving as President of the Academy of Human Resource Development, he is the author, co-author, and co-editor of dozens of articles and over a dozen books, including The Performance Challenge, Beyond the Learning Organization, Stop Managing, Start Coaching, and Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change, recipient of the Academy of Human Resource Development book-of-the-year award in 2000.

Disappointing jumble of ideas

You might like this book if you're happy to sort through lots and lots of pieces of advice in search of the occasional insight that works for you. I approached the work as someone who has written about political dynamics and hoped to find ideas and insights that would help me expand my own thinking. I wanted to like the book, but I didn't find anything that seemed new and finally gave up on my initial plan to read the entire book. The work strikes me as all trees and no forest. There's no overarching framework that I could identify, and I'm not clear on how the author defines politician and political.

For example, in the opening chapter, Gilley discusses the idea of a "political interaction." He first defines a political interaction as a "conversation between you and another person designed to achieve a desired result while simultaneously meeting the interests and needs of all parties." That sounds very broad but not very political. It gets odder a couple of pages later when he says that the "primary purpose of political interactions is to assist others by helping them understand their concerns, expectations, thoughts and fears." That sounds to me more like a definition of a counseling session. Go a couple more pages, and you read that a "political interaction is a one-on-one exchange with an individual or group for the purpose of gaining a distinct advantage, building a relationship, sharing information, and/or identifying needs, interests, or expectations." Leaving aside the puzzling idea of a one-one conversation with a group, this definition seems to cover almost any conversation about anything. Put it all together and I get the impression that the author has no coherent framework and doesn't remember what he wrote from one page to the next.

There are lots of specific pieces of advice, but often there's no specification of where these ideas came from. Are they based on research with practicing managers? On the author's own experience? On existing literature? On the author's armchair speculation? Sometimes the author cites specific studies, but much of the time it's not clear.

Designs against Charleston is a fascinating and comprehensive account of the Vesey conspiracy that uses both primary and secondary sources. Until now, readers interested in the trials have had to rely primarily on a heavily censored account published in 1822 by the men who tried the conspirators. This book contains the complete, verbatim transcript of the trials. Here, published for the first time, are the words of the accused as they were originally recorded in the courtroom. Pearson also discusses the social and cultural life of Charleston in the early nineteenth century, the political and religious ideas that inspired Vesey and his followers to plan the city's destruction, and, finally, the impact that the conspiracy and its aftermath had on the lives of South Carolinians, both black and white.

Anybody wonder why this is so expensive?

I guess I can be generous to the other reviews. They seem to be written soon after this book was released.

The errors are not just with the maps. This is a poster child for sloppy historical workmanship. A review of this book by Michael P. Johnson, in "William and Mary Quarterly" Oct '01 completly shredded the book and stated that the actual record indicated exactly the reverse of Pearson's conslusion. The Johnson review earned the prize from the Organization of American Historians for the best journal article of that year in all of American History, in spite of the fact that the President of that organization had written a blurb for the back cover praising the book.

The Pearson could not even get it right in the book title--there was no trial.

The current price for this book is so high because the publisher withdrew the book and tried to recover all copies.

Good scholarship, poor book production

Minor distractions from the otherwise impressive scholarship in this book are the woefully inaccurate maps accompanying the text. In one wildly wrong map, the port city of Charleston is located not on the Atlantic but thirty or more miles inland on a river's bank. I realize such errors should not be chalked up against the author, but for such an expensively-priced volume, a reader should also receive accurate illustrations. A university press should have taken greater care in the production of this otherwise excellent book.

Poor research, inadequate scholarship

Like the previous reviewer stated, this book was thoroughly discredited by Michael P. Johnson. How Pearson could keep his job or his pride after writing this travesty of a book boggles the imagination.

I wonder how he would have graded himself, if he were his own student?

The real tragedy here is that he takes a pivotal historical event in the history of slavery in the US and completely misrepresents it. Bad scholarship doesn't even begin to cover it.

Clearly an Important work and Classic even for Insurgency type warfare

This book is an important and must have classic. For those that think that contemporary maneuver war has been replaced by post-modern insugency, don't bet the farm on it just yet. Certainly Mr. Lind in recent years has taken serious heat for his unconventional views ( no pun intended) on warfare; and if you are familiar with some of the controversy or have read his material you must set all that aside and buy this book anyway.

Despite the fact that this author does not have military experience, in hindsight, as a career soldier, I wish now that I would have had the benefit of this book when it was first published in 1985. This book is clearly written, provides first class examples and is the best book on manuever warfare, bar none.

If you are exploring insurgency and asymmetrical warfare you will still need this book.

For students of insurgency and terrorism you will need to buy this book and think about what the author conveys in terms of asymmetrical warfare, you will have new and wonderful revelations about the conduct of insurgency if you do.

This is THE quintessential primer for Maneuver Warriors!

This primer should be on the reading list of every combat arms and combat support officer and NCO in our armed forces. Bill Lind, a civilian without any military experience, has demonstrated an extraordinary understanding of the art of war. His book has become the "underground bible" for Maneuver Warfare proponents. In this book he discusses the theory of Manuever Warfare and its origins, the principles and techniques required to employ maneuver warfare properly, and the education and training required to make it possible. Much of his work is a 'sort-of' adaptation of the sucessful Blitzkrieg theory. He even discusses the differences of bloody, Attrition Warfare (WWI Trenches) versus the more efficient, life-preserving Maneuver Warfare (Desert Storm). Mr Lind puts these thoughts in the simplest terms even a 'butter-bar' lieutenant could understand. He completes his discussion with a series of lessons written by an experienced USMC Field Grade Off! icer on each principle. Following easy lesson is a brief "homework" exercise designed to test your knowledge and understanding of each principle. William Lind's Maneuver Warfare Handbook is a must read for any serious-minded, professional soldier who wishes to become an exceptional leader and tactician.

Superb military theory

This is a truly influential book. It explains the concept of "Maneuver Warfare" and contrasts it with the US Army's attrition based "AirLand Battle Doctrine". It covers topics such as mission orders, recon pull, decision cycles and tempo, use of the reserve, commander's intent, and other key concepts that teach a junior military leader HOW (vs what) to think.
Based on Boyd's revolutionary OODA cycle theories, it shows how a quick acting, agile force can constantly beat larger, heavier equipped foes. After reading this book you will understand exactly why the German Army of 1940-1941 was so effective against the larger and better equipped French-British, and Soviet Armies.
The book is divided into two halves. The critical part is the first half which explains in clear, understandable terms how maneuver warfare works. The second half is a series of tactical decision games that offer practical examples to teach junior leaders these concepts.
This ideas in this small book were adopted almost verbatim by the USMC for their land war doctrine. This doctrine was so effective in combat against the Iraqi's in 1990 that the US VII Corps had to move up its attack by approx 48 hours to prevent the Iraqi's from completely escaping before the marines pushed them completely out of Kuwait.
This book has served for years as an underground "bible" by maneuver warfare officers looking for a resource to help train junior leaders critical maneuver warfare concepts. While many look to technological answers to 4th Generation Warfare, this book give ideas that apply instead to people and tactics. It leaves the reader with a solid understanding on how men make decisions in combat, as well as how to translate that knowledge to a military advantage. It is a MUST HAVE book for Combat Arms officers and junior leaders.

Excellent PB7 reference for developers of all skill levels

This is an excellent resource for Powerbuilder developers. Though the title indicates that it's for advanced users, I think that any developer will find this book to be quite useful... so don't let the word "advanced" intimidate you (the first part of the book covers the basics, if you need a review). On the other hand, those developers who have been using powerbuilder since the days of the dinosaur will get a lot out of this book. The author covers several advanced development issues that aren't discussed in most PB books. This book is well written & organized, and has a ton of examples. Highly recommended.

Es un excelente libro, escrito por el te�logo Henri de Lubac porque a pesar de que el escritor es religioso, pienso que analiza con mucha objetividad, claridad y conocimiento profundo de los principales exponentes del humanismo ateo. Demuestra conocimientos doctos sobre esa materia. Lo recomiendo ampliamente.

Para entender las grandes contradicciones y decadencia del mundo moderno creo que este libro da muchas luces. Recomendable 100%, el padre Henri de Lubac es uno de los mas grandes te�logos del siglo XX.
