When Western scholars write about non-Western societies, do they inevitably perpetuate the myths of European imperialism? Can they ever articulate the meanings and logics of non-Western peoples? Who has the right to speak for whom? Questions such as these are among the most hotly debated in contemporary intellectual life. In How "Natives" Think, Marshall Sahlins addresses these issues head on, while building a powerful case for the ability of anthropologists working in the Western tradition to understand other cultures.

In recent years, these questions have arisen in debates over the death and deification of Captain James Cook on Hawai'i Island in 1779. Did the Hawaiians truly receive Cook as a manifestation of their own god Lono? Or were they too pragmatic, too worldly-wise to accept the foreigner as a god? Moreover, can a "non-native" scholar give voice to a "native" point of view? In his 1992 book The Apotheosis of Captain Cook, Gananath Obeyesekere used this very issue to attack Sahlins's decades of scholarship on Hawaii. Accusing Sahlins of elementary mistakes of fact and logic, even of intentional distortion, Obeyesekere portrayed Sahlins as accepting a naive, enthnocentric idea of superiority of the white man over "natives"—Hawaiian and otherwise. Claiming that his own Sri Lankan heritage gave him privileged access to the Polynesian native perspective, Obeyesekere contended that Hawaiians were actually pragmatists too rational and sensible to mistake Cook for a god.

Curiously then, as Sahlins shows, Obeyesekere turns eighteenth-century Hawaiians into twentieth-century modern Europeans, living up to the highest Western standards of "practical rationality." By contrast, Western scholars are turned into classic custom-bound "natives", endlessly repeating their ancestral traditions of the White man's superiority by insisting Cook was taken for a god. But this inverted ethnocentrism can only be supported, as Sahlins demonstrates, through wholesale fabrications of Hawaiian ethnography and history—not to mention Obeyesekere's sustained misrepresentations of Sahlins's own work. And in the end, although he claims to be speaking on behalf of the "natives," Obeyesekere, by substituting a home-made "rationality" for Hawaiian culture, systematically eliminates the voices of Hawaiian people from their own history.

How "Natives" Think goes far beyond specialized debates about the alleged superiority of Western traditions. The culmination of Sahlins's ethnohistorical research on Hawaii, it is a reaffirmation for understanding difference.

From Library Journal
On its face, this appears to be a rebuttal of Gananath Obeyesekere's The Apotheosis of Captain Cook (Princeton Univ. Pr., 1992), which was in turn an attempt at refuting Sahlins's earlier explorations of the manner in which the native Hawaiians deified Capt. James Cook in 1779. In actuality, however, it is far more than that. This book is something of an apotheosis in its own right: a peroration on anthropology's responsibility to commit fully to appreciating other cultures' fundamentally different ways of organizing human experience. It provides a sustained theoretical exegesis that will be admired, if not necessarily subscribed to, by all who are engaged in the comparative study of societies, and it may in time prove to be the crowning achievement of one of contemporary anthropology's greatest thinkers and most perspicacious scholars. An important work in historical anthropology
By Jason Baird Jackson
This book is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is a serious and important work enlivened with a humorous edge. It effectively offers one side of a debate on crucial issues in the human sciences. Its author is a leading figure in anthropology and a major thinker more broadly. Even Sahlin's intellectual opponents would acknowledge this as an important work, one that does not deserve the negative review posted here.

A tribute to anthropology.
By Dr. Glockenspiel
This book originates from a decade of careful data readings and re-collectings on hawaiian contact with European sailors headed by James Cook, whose untimely death is explained.

It is a must-read for anyone committed to view our thinking about self, others and the world as being collectively crafted and transmitted as our material-technological surroundings are. Sahlins shows how culture so taken, and further defined as a way of living framed on grand-narrative, works in informing the way we/they feel things, in turning perceptions into thinking and action. In so doing, he fosters the cultural, boassian anthropology's best and most profound insight on human nature to a wider public.

For anyone who holds that nature speaks by itself and to itself through a universal psychological calculus (or mechanism called practical reasoning), who holds that culture is a distorting lense, a source of error and illusion, this book will be irritating, not conforting. But by the same token, it is an opportunity to learn anew.

Convincing?
By Cara
Whether the Hawaiians deified Captain Cook or not has been for a long time hotly contested, which is a good reason to read Sahlins's books with at least some doubt. Sahlins relies heavily on accounts from the sailors who traveled with Cook to get a picture of the festivities and the attitude of the Hawaiians toward the Europeans. However he often interprets the Europeans' view in their journals as the correct view, without giving reference to other events in Hawaiian history that would help the interpretation on the occurrences in the journals. A few of my concerns that were not adequately addressed: According to mythology, Cook was not the first outsider to come to Hawaii, so why should the appearance of Cook awe the Hawaiians so? Furthermore, because Sahlins is trying to defend anthropology's legitimacy, he ignores the fact that early anthropological work was often ethnocentric. Also, from Obeyesekere's book, why would a Hawaiian god come back not looking Hawaiian, not able to speak Hawaiian, and ignorant of Hawaiian customs? Yet, Obeyesekere's book should be taken with some doubt, too, as he bases some of his arguments off of his Sri Lankan background, along with other flaws. My judgment on How "Natives" Think would be better informed if I had read other works by Sahlins, but he makes a strong case here for Cook's apotheosis, especially in his section arguing against Obeyesekere's interpretation of the ceremonies as Cook's initiation as a chief. Both books are good to see both sides of the argument.

This isn't an easy read for the armchair historian
By P.J. Hoffeditz
This isn't an easy read for the armchair historian. It's somewhat dull, unless you're really interested in the English Revolution. Stone is obviously well read and has researched broadly. Unfortunately, his tone is sometimes pedantic and I'm a bit skeptical of his quick and convenient characterization of King James I. If you're like me, researching the English Revolution for academic purposes, then this should be on your reading list. Take a good look at the footnotes, too-- you'll find lots of material for further reading. If you're looking for something to read on a cold winter evening while you sip hot cocoa in front of the fire, this probably isn't it.

Learning The Lessons Of Revolutionary History
By Alfred Johnson
The last time that the name of Professor Lawrence Stone came up in this space was a review of his magisterial study of the rise and triumph of bourgeois family structure and its mores in England, The Family, Sex And Marriage In England 1500-1800(the study centered on English changes, which as the vanguard of capitalism made a study of the bourgeois family structure quite sensible) from 1500 to 1800 so the good professor is certainly familiar with the period under discussion in this book. The bourgeois family study, some 500 pages, abridged, is contrasted here by a much shorter work of less than two hundred pages. But don't be thrown off by the shortness of this work, given the expansiveness of the subject, because this is a serious concise work that lays out for the beginner and the more knowledgeable a very nice grab bag of causes for the 17th century English revolution that gives one a jumping off point for further investigation. For the more advanced devotees of the study of the English revolution there are plenty of footnotes and a bibliography at the end that will provide helpful for that further study.

Of course any speculation on the cause or, more correctly, the causes of the English revolution (like any revolution, or other world historic event) is, for the most part, a matter of hindsight, and therefore ready material for an historian's "cherry-picking" to suit his or her predilections. And also a cause, as in the English case described here by Professor Stone in the first section of the book, for all sorts of "flare-ups" back in the 1950s and 1960s in British academic circles. From such questions as whether the 1640-60 events were even a revolution ( a question pretty much now resolved in favor of revolution) to which class lead and benefited from it to more esoteric questions about whether the gentry (the big landowners, for the most part) benefited from the revolution or not there was something of a field day on this period and Professor Stone seems to have been right in the middle of it along with such English revolution luminaries as Professors Tawney and Trevor-Roper. And as long as it is kept to the academic milieu ( as is the usual situation) such infighting can, and in this case did, produce some useful insights.

After the academic "fireworks" settle down from the first section Professor Stone, in the second and third sections, gets to his laundry list of causes for the revolution, some worth further investigation, some that seem more speculative (like the question of the rise and fall of the gentry, or parts of it, in the rush to revolution). He breaks down the period from 1529 to 1642 into smaller segments in order to separate longer term causes from shorter and more direct causes. Obviously any study of long term trends toward revolution in England in this period has to include changes in agricultural production toward more capitalist methods of growing for the market, the role of demographic spreads and population growth (especially London's growth) and, probably most importantly, the fall out from the Protestant Reformation as it played out in there. Shorter term reasons include the rise of Puritanism in the wake of the religious and political policies the James I and Charles I regimes, the vast increase in literacy, education, and lay authority in church matters, changes in the legal and state church structure, particularly by Charles I promoting a more authoritarian regime in the face of more democratic church movements, and, as always, the personal factor, of Charles I's eagerness to shoot himself in the foot every time some controversy came up so that in the end he alienated, and made indifferent or hostile , the elements of society that stool closest to him, especially the merchants and nobility. This is hardly exhaustive of Professor Stone's presentation but should be enough to whet the appetite.

Of course for revolutionaries, as well as thoughtful historians, the causes of revolution and the pre-revolutionary period are important in their own right. Just as today we can see, even if we cannot right this minute do anything about it, that conditions in America and Europe are ripe for revolution, a socialist revolution, and we can point to unemployment, the gaps between the rich and poor, extensive deindustrialization, cuts in public social welfare budgets and the like as the precursors we can look at the English, French Russian and Chinese revolutions for some insights. The English revolution, as the first great Western one, is particularly important to study because of the links to America and because something in the English-American psyche (at least in the past) has acted almost as a barrier to further revolutions among English-speaking Anglo-American people.

When reforms turn revolutionary.......
By Gary C. Marfin
In 1640 few supported the dissolution of the monarchy or the House of Lords...The heart of this book is its long chapter on the causes of the English revolution. That revolution, Stone maintains, was in a real sense caused by the dissolution of government (rather than causing its dissolution); that "class" warfare along Marxist explanatory lines is not applicable to the revolution and; that the revolution was more than a reaction to unpopular monarch. He then sets out to identify the long-term, underlying causes of the war and its more proximate catalysts. His discussion of the weak reach of the Tudor bureaucracy and its corresponding lack of credibility as a legal enforcer, and his discussion of the impact of Puritan thought are especially compelling.

The first section of the book surveys the methodological issues involved in explaining revolution. This survey, though somewhat dated by now, still provides useful insights. And, he has a caustic eye for those of his colleagues who prefer an arid, artifically technical jargon over clarity and concise prose.

Corruption, Development and Underdevelopment, by Robin Theobald

Corruption, for most of us, almost immediately evokes images of the third world especially countries like Nigeria, Mexico and India. Whilst we may concede that corruption exists in developed countries it is generally thought to be under control. Despite such widely-held views there is very little hard evidence on the actual extent of corruption in any country. This book strives to look behind impressions in an attempt to determine what factors underlie the high profile of corruption in UDCs. For an adequate understanding of the phenomenon the global character of corruption is emphasized as well as the necessity of locating within a broader process of economic and social change.

Explaining and Understanding International Relations (Clarendon Paperbacks), by Martin Hollis, Steve Smith

A collaboration between a philosopher and an international relations scholar, this work examines the philosophical issues that underlie the theory of international relations. Part I focuses on the dominant theories of Idealism, Realism, and Behavioralism, and Part II examines the international system, the state, bureaucracies, and the individual--four factors commonly assumed to account for international behavior. The authors conclude with a summary of the links between the two forms of analysis and an open-ended assessment of their relative merits which will stimulate further discussion.

Incisive, theory driven approach
By Amazon Customer
Having just completed this work as part of self-preparation for an entrance exam to a Master's program in IR, I would like to concur with the first reviewer's points (2002 review) and add what I hope is a salient point. For pure theorists, this is an excellent analysis of competing views of IR philosophy. I would caution, however, that this book is not for the faint of heart. Even a more-than-casual student may be put off by the lack of case studies- in a nine-chapter book, it is not until we approach Game Theory in chapter six that more than passing reference is made to application. And, it should be noted, since the book was published in 1991, the case-study in question is the USSR. To be fair, the authors make no pretensions that they are writing a collection of case-studies. Those prepared to invest some brain-power in studying this book will come away with a deep understanding of arguments for and against nearly every theory of IR, within the constraints of publication date. Martin and Hollis's work would benefit from a look at the more recent developments in IR, including the rise of non-state actors over the last two decades, but this is a problem of chronology, not an inherent flaw in their work.

An effective comparison of two analytical approaches
By Thomas Doyle
Hollis and Smith's book, now somewhat two decades old, still serves as a useful contrast in ways of approaching the study of international politics. It is well written, tightly argued, and provocative.

A great teaching tool
By A Customer
This review by a philospher of science and an International Relations theorist of the range of debates in International Relations theory is one of the more useful advanced teaching tools in the discipline. What distinguingshes this book from the usual run-of-the-mill IR theory textbook is the authors' concern to locate IR theory within the broader questions of philosophy of the sciences. The conclusions will certainly not please those who believe in positivism, and provides one of the most convincing critiques of positivist approaches in IR. This is a book for those who take theory serious, and are prepared to put some thought into their reading, and who believe that epistemology and ontology are important.
I have used this book in a postgraduate IR theory course virtually since it was published, and year after year my students find it the most useful and interesting piece of reading in the course

Fast-paced and exciting book
By Ashly
Somehow I ended up on Andrew Mayne's email list. I have no memory of signing up for it, but I'm very glad I did. A few weeks ago Mr. Mayne sent out a call to his fans to help him proofread his latest book. Having never read one of his books, I decided to take part in this. I am so glad I did, because Station Breaker is an awesome book. I found the technology portion really interesting and the book was fast-paced and well written. You could easily finish it in 1-2 sittings. This was the first book I read by Andrew Mayne, but if his others are anything like Station Breaker, I will be reading more.

Grounded space, a captivating read!
By 3pointedit
I have been reading some hard SF lately like SevenEves and thought I could try a similar contemporary space story. But this didn't read like any science fiction, this could so easily be science fact it scared me to turn on any 24 hour news station in case I saw the events unfolding for real! This book was an engrossing page turner, every time I launched a reader on a different device I was stunned to see how many pages I had read between session syncs. Whew it's like a Matthew Reilly roller coaster book but with charm and heart.

This is what science fiction was meant to be. Universally appealing, fast-paced, and fun to read.
By Michael Jacobs
The future of science and fiction is here. In this fast-paced thriller, Andrew Mayne keeps readers guessing what will happen next while providing vivid imagery of what our near future holds. A great blend of mystery, humor, personal challenges, and more, Station Breaker will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Mayne does a great job developing characters and making the future of space feel approachable. Scenes are crisp, action-packed, and at times, shocking (in a good way). Mayne delivers a stellar story.

This is an unsurpassed classic!
By paedagogue
which is why it remains in print, despite the fact that it is a modest paperback with no illustrations whatsoever (almost unheard-of for an art book). The text (originally, a German-language contribution) was written by two very young scholars whose bold thesis is in many ways representative of the brilliant inquiries of modernist thinkers between the two World Wars (when a whole generation of Western intellectuals--including the highly articulate proponents of Surrealism--had fully absorbed the ground-breaking psychological researches of Freud and Jung). Kris and Kurz's thesis is that our modern ideas about what makes artists tick (inspiration, genius, eccentricity, neurosis or even madness, technical wizardry, etc.) have a very ancient and widespread ancestry. They correspond, to a greater or lesser extent, to a transcultural, and composite "artist type" (the different elements do not form a seamless whole, but arise from diverse and overlapping traditional understandings of the skills required for art-making) whose features can be found--as the title suggests--in ancient mythic and legendary material, and can be traced into the documented history of art, down to our own day. Rather than claiming outright that the "image" of The Artist is an archetype reembodied in every authentic flesh-and-blood artist, Kris and Kurz leave us with the more interesting possibility that individual artists, whether trained in a tradition that exalts personal talent, or one that rewards collaborative effort (and likewise the far more numerous viewers of their art), all inherit the composite "artist-template" and are molded by it in one way of another, according to the specific expectations of their particular social world. The authors cite a wealth of anecdotal material surviving in ancient European and Asian literary sources, establish its connections with Early Modern artistic biography, and also draw on anthropological material then becoming available to them. The book is not an "easy read," but it is concise and to the point (the opening chapter lays out all of the main arguments and rewards careful reading), and filled with marvelous examples of the special roles artists are, even now, called upon to play.

I wanted to like it, but I didn't
By TroutChaser
This is the most dry, boring bit of writing I've had the misfortune to pick up in a long while. The title misled me into thinking I would get a lot more than I did--or at a minimum a lot more interesting than it was. Maybe a shrink would get more use out of it. If you're an artist, not so much.

Excellent, engaging introduction to Scratch
By S. Alexander
My 8 year-old loves this book. Super Scratch Programming Adventure didn't hold his attention a couple years ago, but he's gotten completely hooked by this book. It's very easy to understand and the programs are a good balance between easy to understand and complex enough to be interesting. In fact, my 5 year-old (who wants to be like her brother) is able to copy much of the programs herself. She doesn't fully understand what everything means, but she's thinking about it and getting great exposure.

Nice Book
By Tam
This wasn't exactly what I expected, but still worth the money. It has only 4 or 5 games to make, but shows them step by step. This is helpful for kids starting out with Scratch, or for teachers.
