My Early Life: 1874-1904, by Winston Churchill

Here, in his own words, are the fascinating first thirty years in the life of one of the most provocative and compelling leaders of the twentieth century: Winston Churchill.

As a visionary, statesman, and historian, and the most eloquent spokesman against Nazi Germany, Winston Churchill was one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. In this autobiography, Churchill recalls his childhood, his schooling, his years as a war correspondent in South Africa during the Boer War, and his first forays into politics as a member of Parliament. My Early Life not only gives readers insights into the shaping of a great leader but, as Churchill himself wrote, “a picture of a vanished age.” To fully understand Winston Churchill and his times, My Early Life is essential reading.

Amazon.com Review
The voice of a vanished England speaks from the pages of Winston Churchill's evocative memoir of his first 30 years (1874-1904). The young Churchill inhabits a world in which men fight like hell in meaningless colonial wars--India, Egypt, South Africa--soldiering across the imperial map then extending the hand of friendship to their erstwhile enemy as if they were schoolmates at Harrow. Yet Churchill, born into a privileged family, was not an uncritical supporter of the Victorian status quo. He himself loathed Harrow; an especially amusing chapter skewers the school's emphasis on an irrelevant classical education and rote learning. A firm Tory, he considered himself a friend of the working class, and in 1899 campaigned for parliament with a Socialist colleague. Looking back from his vantage point of 1930, Churchill expresses the most attractive values of the English aristocracy--honor, loyalty, fair play--without giving the impression he wants to live in the past. The book's appeal also stems from its magisterial but colloquial prose. Anyone familiar with recordings of Churchill's rousing speeches during Word War II will hear in their minds' ears that growling timbre and unmistakably patrician accent as they read. Though he would have preferred the peace prize, My Early Life offers good evidence that Churchill's 1953 Nobel for literature was aptly awarded. --Wendy Smith

Review
Narrator Frederick Davidson employs a slight Churchillian drawl, making this one of the most completely satisfying programs in years. --Library Journal

An amusing and inspiring read
By Andrew Johnston
What surprised me most about this book was the humour. I expected the familiar story of our greatest leader's early life, I expected an insightful account of Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, I expected a stirring tale of a young man who was a practical adventurer just as much as politician and author. I didn't expect to laugh out loud regularly for much of the story.

If you've seen the film "Young Winston", based on this book, you will be familiar with some of the events. Other programmes and books have adequately explained his war leadership and his contribution to many serious political issues. However, the films and documentaries I have seen fail to capture the mischievous spirit communicated through this book.

This a fascinating study of a bygone age, when Britain maintained a great empire, when most politicians took the title Lord, and when politics and army officership were sports for those of independent means. Interestingly despite his aristocratic bloodline Churchill's family was not particularly wealthy and some of the most poignant lessons stem from this.

Sometimes the sentiments in the book appear bloodthirsty or imperialistic, but you have to realise that at least part of the time Churchill is writing satirically, reflecting common values which you suspect he did not always share himself. When he is sincerely expressing his own serious ideals it is usually easy to detect.

These beliefs link both his skilful analysis of historical events, and Churchill's account of his own development. For example he explains the British government's failure to be magnanimous after the early victories of the Boer war as the reason that a relatively fast-moving and honourable conflict descended into "shocking evils" on both sides. The same failing is shown as a prime force in the leftward drift of Churchill's own politics.

Churchill was a great writer, but it's instructive to learn that his facility with English developed largely because he was judged early on to be too dim to cope with Latin and Greek. The classics loss was our gain, the legacy including both Churchill's great deeds and great writing.

The last chapter is slightly disappointing, with Churchill's early parliamentary career an anticlimax, and the story stops rather than ending on a major event. That apart, the pace, interest and humour are consistent throughout.

This book was written in 1930, when Churchill was already 56, but in the "wilderness years" before he regained high office and led Britain through the Second World War. It is interesting to speculate whether the book would have been very different if it were written either much earlier or later.

If you want adventure, read this book. If you want to understand a great man, read this book. If you want to do both and have a good laugh, read this book.

A fantastic era gone forever.
By Richard P. Hoye
Churchill has always been a most incredible character. This autobiography of the early years of his life is so well written, humorous and insightful that I could not put it down.
Churchill is to most people the cigar chomping leader pictured during the blitz. To see him as a young cavalry officer leading the last charge of the British Empire boggles the mind.
This is a must read.

Another world
By Doug Gross
This is my first reading of Churchill. What a wonderful writer. His stories of a period long gone today of the army and the Polo teams, his early experiences in politics and his efforts to get to every battle so as to not miss any of the excitement are inspiring.

The Secret of Forgiveness of Sin and Being Born Again, by Pastor Ock Soo Park

The greatest gift of God is the forgiveness of sin. Man became distant from God through sin, and had to struggle for in darkness with shame, pain, and fear instead of living inside of true joy, happiness, and blessings. But now, all of this can be restored through the forgiveness of sin alone. The clear truth of the forgiveness of sin is hidden in the Bible as a secret.

Captain Naaman being cleansed of leprosy was recorded to teach us how we could be cleansed of sins. David committing sin with Uriah's wife was also recorded to demonstrate how we can receive the forgiveness of sin.

It contains the secret of truth to true happiness and love
By A Customer
The only reason this book was given 5 stars is because it was the most I, and others that read it, could only give it. This book carries the words you can and will never hear in the world. Many of the words we speak in our lives, our language is very often used extravagantely and without the meaning the word actually holds. But this book is said to be the direct translation of God's Words and His heart (speaking of the Bible) through God's servant; of course, at first it seemed as impossible as it sounded, but incredibly, after reading it, I was able to believe it. Somehow, in my life, God always seemed to be a part of fiction, but I still tried to find something that was true, something or someone that was greater than the reality that we all see. I was never able to find peace, true peace, I realize after reading this book, and I didn't want to live life anymore if this so-called reality was all that there was to it: much pain, struggle, and hardships behind the times we try to find joy and pleasure, which all seems to be temporary. Having children of my own is the only time I was able to share true love, but their lives, I realized, will not be so different from mine, no matter where in the world they end up. This book contains the words which no person can say or even think of because of all mans' pride and stubborness and their all different standards in this world. These words seemed as though they came from one who looked at mankind from afar. Many priests, pastors, etc. try and interpret/explain the Bible from their own view, but the truth is that no one can really understand the Bible, the one who wrote it, and if it really is the book of God's words, why there are some of the things that are written in there. I'm sure I am not alone who may feel this way and even though there are people who feel otherwise, this book is to be read by all people, regardless of their religion or belief because it reveals the "secret" to true happiness and love. I strongly advise you to read this book to find the real truth. I hear they will launch more of its editions onto the website. I truly look forward to it.

The True Love send to me through his sermon from this book.
By Lek
Previously, I was a buddist. Most of my life had been spent on buddhist religion. Four year ago, I also spent my life as a christian in the church. In that church, I found out one year later that it also a religion life to me. I realized that there are not different for me. There're still no peaceful in my heart, deep of my heart, I'm still looking for something; rest, peaceful, happiness. I found myself I have too much sin in my heart and have no way out. But now through the fact from the Bible, I found happiness, peaceful in my heart. Pastor Ock Soo Park explained about our heart precisely through the Words of God in the Bible. In this book, Pastor Ock Soo Park told us the nature of our heart. Since we all do not know our nature, that's why we all are suffer. The more we interfere our nature, the more we get suffer. This is the truth. So as long as we know our nature, there will be no problem at all. Faith do not come from 'try to believe', but from 'realize by your heart'. If you read this book and open your heart to it, you will find yourself realize it and finally gain happiness. This book is not talking about religion life, they are all the truth of human being. The message from this book is like the Good News for your life which you cannot find from anywhere else. I strongly recommend you to read it.

Great reference book
By Ulrika Eriksson
The Tao of Travel-Enlightenments from Lives on the Road of Paul Theroux.
This book in soft leather binding (I think), with illuminated letters and ornaments and with a band attached to serve as a bookmark, made me so glad. It has a lovely font, Miller, and a drawn map of the world inside its book covers- A NEW AND ACCVRAT MAP OF THE WORLD - from 1626.This book contains mostly of passages and quotes from other books about travelling and not so much of Paul Theroux's. It's a great reference book. Freya Stark, Dervla Murphy - travel authors I must read!
Read the Tao of Travel slowly and in smaller bits! Come back to it for inspiration to further travel reading!

unbelieveable
By Christopher G. Tenney
how paul theroux was able to put his name on this book as though it his own work, I will never know, It's a collection of quotes from other authors that seems to be thrown together in no particular order. The back of the cover says " a literary travelers handbook from one of the finest travel writers." Seriously this just irks me that he took other authors writings and posted them in a book and put his name on the cover.
