I'm a philosophy professor, and am using this to teach my intro to global ethics seminar. I've founded it very useful. Students seem to find it accessible. The case studies, which demonstrate how to apply various political/moral theories, are great. I wouldn't hesitate in using this again as the main text for a 100 or 200 level course.

Olov Sterner Chemistry, Health and Environment Most chemicals used in modern society are harmful to man, and can affect the environment in various ways. For example, most cases of human cancers are believed to be caused by chemicals, and the apparent climatic changes that recently have attracted attention may well be the result of the uncontrolled release of several compounds into the atmosphere. However, chemicals do not affect either health or environment by chance. Instead, it is the chemical properties, for example the volatility, the solubility, and the reactivity towards cellular components such as proteins and DNA, that are incompatible with the natural chemical processes on which life on earth depends on. Such properties of a chemical are determined by the molecular structure, and can in most cases be assessed by somebody with a trained eye simply by inspecting the structure. By learning more about the relationships between the structures of organic compounds and their properties, and between the chemical properties and the effects on health and the environment, we may at least to some degree predict and thereby avoid chemical hazards. This is essentially what this book is about.

About the Author
Prof. Olov Sterner is Head of the Division of Organic Chemistry as well as of the Department of Chemistry (400 employees) at Lund University in Sweden. Originally an organic chemist he became interested in bioactive natural products and he has conducted research aiming at the isolation, characterisation, synthesis, and QSAR studies of secondary metabolites from plants and fungi. Prof. Sterner has published more than 330 research papers, 120 conference abstracts and 20 conference papers.

Indeed, eminent Presley biographer Guralnik (Last Train to Memphis) writes that, given Jorgensen's attention to detail, the author is "either a madman or a great detective." While so many Presley books are written by authors who never seem to overcome their poetic sense of awe regarding the King, Jorgensen, being an RCA executive, couches the story of Presley's life in the gritty details of the artist's work and gets past the myths, giving readers a glimpse of what it might have been like to be Elvis. THE book to read if you are a lover of Elvis' music

At last a book not about the women Elvis had, the Memphis Mafia, the Colonel, No, this book is about the man and what he was after all most famous for - his wonderful music. This book is painstakingly researched, with enormous attention to detail and beautifully put together with many great pictures that I had never seen before. Jorgensen really did his homework on this and his admiration for Elvis comes through in his writing.

It is great to see who played what at every recording session and how Elvis felt about his music - a great perfectionist who was totally frustrated about many of the inferior songs he had to sing in the even more inferior films he later had to make. When you read how many takes on songs he did in the studio to get things just right, you just wonder how his wonderful voice held out all those years, especially as he, after exhausting recording sessions lasting hours, would sing gospel songs throughout the night as well. Yes, Elvis was truly an "Olympic Champion of Singing" as someone once put it. A jewel of a book for any true Elvis fan and full marks to Jorgensen.

Complete session info, with a running timeline (it is a narrative, not just a sessions listing...) and relevant pictures to the period, you'd be hard pressed to find a more thorough document. After seeing book after book about: his upbringing, his girlfriends, his diet, whatever; this was the book I was looking for!

This is a catalog of ALL of the songs that Elvis ever recorded. Some of the of the other reviewers wrote that it is JUST about the music. But, in fact, there is a lot of commentary about things that were going on in Elvis' life during the recordings, too. So, this is a great chronology of his personal life that went along with the recordings. This is somewhat unique for books about Elvis, because while you read that this happened or that happened, it is hard to put it all on timeline. The bonus with this book is that there are a whole string of new people that you learn about, because you hear about the record company staff, the recording artists, and other people related to the production of his albums and even his movies. But, on top of everything, the music is ALL here!

Thoughtful Treatment of a Tremendous Problem

There is no larger controversy in accounting or investment circles today than the treatment of intangible assets. Economists and investment analysts may debate what is new about the "New Economy", but one thing remains clear, intangible assets are assuming a critical role in the creation of wealth.
Non-physical sources of value, intangible assets are generated by innovation, unique organizations and human resource practices. This asset class often interacts with tangible and financial assets to create shareholder value and stimulate economic growth. Yet they remain conspicuously absent from required disclosures.
Baruch Lev argues in this book that his lack of public information results in improved management of corporate assets contributes to a higher cost of capital and affords abnormally large gains to insiders at the expense of outside investors. To level the playing field, Lev proposes companies periodically release, in addition to the required income, balance sheet and cash flow statements, quantitative and standardized information most relevant to the company value chain or business model.
Specifically, he would require three classes of timely disclosure on what he calls the innovative and successful company's lifeline: Discovery and Learning, Implementation and Commercialization. Under Discovery and Learning, he would require disclosure of internal renewal, acquired capabilities and networks. For Implementation, required disclosures would include intellectual property, technological feasibility and Internet metrics. For Commercialization, required disclosures would include data on customers, performance and growth prospects.
These disclosures will transform the accounting profession from one that is essentially backward looking - how much was sold at what cost - to a forward looking - the creation of value enhancing assets. This recognizes that in the current knowledge-based economy, value creation or destruction precedes transactions, often by years.
Lev's proposed disclosures would compliment current disclosures, providing a reality check on the system of value creation or destruction as products, services and processes move along the value chain.

One side of the story

This book was published 2001 by Brookings as part of a pair; the other being Unseen Wealth

Lev's book comprised his view, whereas Unseen Wealth included about 20 views including Lev's

Lev is primarily concerned with helping the accounting industry fill its black hole; intangibles being the difference between market value and the tangibles that the 100 years rules of tangible accounting prescribe for. Formerly this blackhole was also known as goodwill.

The trouble is as the service and globally/locally networked economies compounded over the last quarter century, goodwill (or transparent trustflows of an organisation mapped in flows of productivities and demands and across to partnering organisations) became the larger dynamic explaining how most value compounds (both finacially and in human terms like learning, community, social progress that take more than 90 days to invest in and may have diverse views of development).

I dont find in Lev's book any answers to such issues as how to resolve the wicked assumptions that all tangible accounting revolve round. These include:

people are costs, only machines are investments

separate units, separate 90 day periods rather than want to map how they interact and compound in non-lonear ways

What is really needed for tracking, strategizing, transparently governing, leading, developing intangibles (and human relationships) is an opposite type of maths that value multiplies instead of separating out bottom lines as if everything in teh world adds up perfectly in 90 days periods. Whilst Unseen Wealth is clear about the magnitude of the Intangibles Crisis, Lev is not so clear. However, his work is the middleground and epicentre if you are looking at intangibles only from the perspective of what to do if you are intent on perpetuating the traditional accounting profession as nearly as possible as is.

With the collapse of dot coms and many other high tech companies, many wonder whether intangibles should also go by the wayside. In his book, Lev persuasively argues otherwise. In today's environment, in both old and new economy sectors, the only systematic and sustainable drivers of value and growth are intangible assets, such as patents, brands, unique supply and distribution processes, and human resource practices.
This landmark book represents the most comprehensive and thorough economic analysis of intangibles to date. Building on the author's high-impact research and first-hand experience working with executives, consultants, and regulators, the book offers a coherent framework for understanding the fundamental economics of intangible assets. Baruch Lev identifies attributes of intangibles that are different from tangible assets (property, plant, and equipment), by focusing on their distinctive role in value-creation. He highlights the most critical issue concerning intangibles: the need to make relevant information available to outsiders.
Perhaps the most difficult job in tackling a challenging issue, such as intangibles, is to recommend a practical solution. Baruch Lev proposes an information system, the Value Chain Scoreboard, to enhance information disclosure about intangibles. A notable feature of the system is its emphasis of key drivers in the creation of valuable intangible assets, as opposed to ex post measurement of performance. Although the focus is on improving external information communication, its mission of reflecting the valuation-creation process of intangibles makes the system potentially useful for managers who want to monitor the performance of investment in intangibles.
With a wonderful blend of real-world stories and easily understood economic reasoning, the book also has tremendous educational value, in a variety of business disciplines. It is an especially valuable source for those interested in learning about managing knowledge-based business.

Not THAT "Girl on the Train" OMG I read the wrong book.

I have been hearing so many great things about The Girl on the Train, so I read it. Or thought I did. THIS is not that book! That book is by Paula Hawkins.

It's funny, there are several similarities between the two books, and this one was written first I think. This book is not so great, however. Mystery fans might like it. But by the time I finished I was thinking "man how did this book get such hype"? It is a standard murder mystery that in my opinion is not very well written. It has incredibly unbelievable coincidences and poor character development. It left me thinking I could write a better book than this. Then I went online to complain and I realized I had bought the wrong book, LOL!

Don't make the mistake I did -- this is Girl on *A* Train, not THE Girl on THE Train.

Good writing

The description of this book drew me in. The writing was good. The mystery was interesting. The broken up chapters filled in back story. I think maybe it might have flowed a little better if the backstory was woven in instead of separated in a chunk in the middle. I say this because I didn't feel like I knew who Elly was until I got to the middle piece. Sympathy and interest in her earlier might have helped to pull the story along.
I wasn't entirely convinced of the ending. Interesting twist though. All in all a good read. I would read more by this author.

Wrong Train

Did not expect this book. My sister described another plot and I kept waiting for what I thought would happen. I finally realized that I was on a different train. Then I relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the trip which contained amazing twists and turns, all the way to the end. It wasn't the book club special, but should be.

Short and to the point; excellent; no excess verbiage; a bargain @ $7

We live in a fast paced society with little need to repeat the same ideas over and over again. While this book may appear short in pages, it is far from short in essential ideas. This booklet doesn't pretend to be a reference volume, some 500 to 1000 page tome, that one has to outline with a yellow highlighter then hunt for an answer. I loved the fact that it was short and to the point. If the investment in this books helps me avoid just one mistake, it was well worth it. In short this booklet offers lessons of many years of experience in a professional practice in a short easy to read summary. Thank you Mona Loeser.

PreS-Gr 2–Sneezy the Snowman is cold. In an effort to warm up, he drinks hot cocoa and subsequently melts. Now a puddle in the surrounding snow, he asks three children (and two playful cardinals) to rebuild him. Once complete, Sneezy is again too cold, so one of the little girls gives him a hat. Unfortunately, it is not enough to keep him warm. He attempts a dip in a hot tub only to once again melt and be rebuilt, and adorned with an additional garment. He has a similar experience involving a campfire. This time, however, the snowman gains a coat. Now he's too hot. At last, the children get him seven scoops of ice cream and he reaches a happy medium. The repetitive, rhyming text reads well. The bright, cartoonlike illustrations are hand drawn and colored in Photoshop, and the small details will reward those who have a close look, particularly at those cardinals. Even snowmen get chilly sometimes, and on a particularly blustery day, Sneezy just can’t stop shivering. With his own ingenuity and the help of three multicultural children, he tries cocoa, a hat, a hot tub, a scarf, a campfire, and a coat to warm up, but with each attempt, he melts, and it’s up to the kids to build him up “brand new” again before yet another puddle can form. At last, the kids realize that ice-cream can play a key role as a temperature-regulating agent. The rhyming text keeps the snow show moving along at a brisk, bouncing pace, and the series of problems and solutions creates an entertaining, recognizable pattern. The large digital illustrations are colorful and uncluttered, and they slyly integrate the additional antics of two boisterous cardinals, who cavort along with Sneezy until his happy, Goldilocks-like proclamation, “At last! I feel just right.” Although not a necessary purchase, this may be just the thing to freshen up wintry storytimes. Preschool-Grade 2. --Andrew Medlar

Kid tested, mother approved

I am pretty picky when it comes to winter or Christmas books. I like to find books that focus a little less on Santa & more on love & kindness & the spirit of the season. I really enjoy this one & the kids have a lot of fun with it too. I read this story along with a snowman game at my kids' preschool & 1st grade class parties this past year & it was a big hit with both age groups. The kids like the fun repetition of the story & they like to do big exaggerated sneezes along with Sneezy. I liked that the children in the story all share their things with Sneezy. One girl even gives Sneezy the coat off her back. So the kids get a fun story & mom gets to talk about the importance of giving. Win win!
