I love the way the author breaks down each persuasion, or provide you with example that illustrate his point flawlessly. I will read and re-read this book until I master these techniques which are useful in many situations. I've tried a few of the things he's suggested and they have worked like charm. A very valuable book! Leaders and managers should be required to read it!

I got so much out of the book, to the point of being able to successfully use its principles twice within a week of reading. I plan on re-reading this book every 6 months or so as a refresher. I really get more satisfaction from being nice to people and I love how the author book encourages kindness while teaching you to stand your ground and get what you want.

About the Author

Jessica B. Harris is the author of eleven cookbooks documenting the foods of the African Diaspora, including The Africa Cookbook and The Welcome Table, and has written and lectured widely about the culture of Africa in the Americas. A professor at Queens College, CUNY, she also consults at Dillard University in New Orleans, where she founded the Institute for the Study of Culinary Cultures. She was recently inducted into the James Beard Foundation's Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America.

Savor This Book!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I learned so much! Jessica Harris brings together food and cooking from West Africa and the Caribbean to the United States. She chronicles the African origin of familiar foods such as okra, yams, millet, and rice. New World crops like tomatoes, corn, peanuts, and chile peppers made their way to Africa and became an important part of African cookery. Readers are introduced to the splendor of African courts and importance of culinary rituals. The Transatlantic Slave Trade brought Africans to American shores along with a deep culinary history. The enslavement of Africans and African Americans provides the early context for the spread of traditional food and cooking. Harris draws from much original material: diaries of ship captains and travelers, interviews from the WPA slave narratives, and excerpts from old cookbooks.

As can be expected from Jessica Harris, this book is meticulously researched and written with dashing prose. This is not a cookbook. In fact, there are only twenty-two recipes. Instead, Harris pulls together the cuisines of African, Caribbean, African American, European, and early American cooking. The book includes historical illustrations, a reading list, an annotated bibliography of selected African American cookbooks, and a thorough index.

I highly recommend this book. You will learn about black cooks in kitchens of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, the origins of the Philadelphia pepperpot and creole gumbo with its odd number of greens. Harris' book will inform you and leave you hungry and wanting more.

incredible book food for thought

growing up as a child, i lived down south and i often wondered why certain foods represented new years day and how certain other foods were called soul food and what that all meant, well finally here is a book that answers that and then some in full detail.Jessica Harris brings the full course and side dishes from Africa to America. talks about the food prepared on the Plantation And the impact of the food and time period. this is required reading and it will make you understand so much of the then and now. very detailed and quite informative.

Pleasantly surprised

This book wasn't at all what I thought it would be, I was pleasantly surprised.
High on the Hog is a history of foods and recipes,starting in Africa and continuing on to North America, passing on from generation to generation. Not only a culinary history of African Americans, but also a basic history lesson as well. The combination of stories of real people and personal experiences makes for a very interesting book.

Among the contributing factors that are discussed are genetics, habitual intake of high glycemic index carbohydrates, fructose, saturated fats, trans fatty acids, vitamins, micronutrients, obesity, smoking, and lack of exercise.

The author describes the actual mechanisms by which Metabolic Syndrome progresses and causes damage in the body, including the action of insulin and the pathophysiology of insulin resistance. Details are provided on what occurs in the liver, pancreas, muscle, fat cells, and immune system as Metabolic Syndrome progresses. New findings are presented on fat cells, including the fact that they are beginning to be considered as endocrine cells. There is a substantive discussion of leptin, which is one of the important adipocytokines. Also carbohydrate, 'bad fats', inflammation, oxidative damage, over-stimulation of the 'fight or flight' system, and high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can actually cause the manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome. These explanations set the stage for an explanation of the inter-relationships between Metabolic Syndrome, psychiatric illness, dementia and effects of not only diet and life choices, but also the effects of psychiatric medications.

Finally, there is an important and unique section on the relationship between Metabolic Syndrome and various psychiatric illnesses, and how they exacerbate each other. The significance of Metabolic Syndrome in Major Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia, fibromyalgia and Polycystic Ovary Disease is vast and it is important to realise the effects of psychiatric medications on Metabolic Syndrome. The author discusses antidepressants, mood stabilizers and the new atypical antipsychotics. There are dramatic differences among medications in the way they affect Metabolic Syndrome and pharmaceutical companies will want to promote patient awareness with this book.

A Terrific Reference For All Members Of Medicinal Practice

I have read all three of Dr. Mendelson's works, and I was tremendously impressed by his 'Beyond Alzheimer's ..' When I discovered 'Metabolic Syndrome and Psychiatric Illness,' I knew I had to have it. In this work, Dr. Mendelson takes you deeper into the realities that began with the fifteen cent hamburger, expansive methods
the populace found to be sedentary, and why, when you're out shopping, you witness so many potential diabetes II and cardiac artery disease candidates. Each chapter ends with a robust listing of sources Dr. Mendelson utilized in constructing his tome. Frankly, I saw a few things about me in his writing; things which I have begun to change to regain good feelings about myself and how I got where I am. It is also becoming very apparent why insurance companies, with the extended actuary tables for men and women, are pushing hard to implement premiums or no premiums on individuals who are living life in the 'fat lane' and feeling assured that there is a medication for everything. This book should open many eyes, and many consciences about themselves and the life that lies ahead. The book is not your ordinary rudimentary exercise in wellness and fitness. Rather, it is an amazing journey into 50 years of American life that that the human body never expected to be subjected to.
