Elizabeth Vander Lei is Associate Professor of English at Calvin College where she teaches courses on writing, linguistics, and writing pedagogy. She continues to research the intersections of rhetoric, particularly African American rhetoric, and religious belief.

Comprehensive, great book on juggling

I have had this book for the last 10 years, and it is well-worn. It has been very useful in helping me refine my club juggling, devil stick, and ball juggling skills. The diagrams are well drawn, and Finnigan also provides hints for when things go wrong.
He goes into details other books skip over (such as color-changing rings) and cigar box juggling.
My only complaint is that this book isn't indexed, so you have to rely on the Table of Contents to search for stuff.
All in all, I highly recommend this book.

An Excellent Resource

This is the book that I turn to when I want to learn something new. It is not the best "Learn to Juggle" book, but if you can already juggle, this book will push you to the next level.
This book just expects you to want to learn how to juggle 5 pins, or learn complicated passing routines.
The coverage complete, but brief. There isn't a lot of hand holding, but covers a lot of ground.

This unique memoir tells the story of one black woman's experience as maid, cook, and confidante to noted writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Set in North Florida in the 1940s, Idella deals openly and frankly with the ambiguous relationship between a white woman and her black retainer. Fascinating details of Rawlings's kindnesses (sometimes patronizing) as well as her drunken rages and depressions are interspersed with Parker's observations on race relations in the pre-Civil Rights Movement South. Although "ahead of her time" in her defense of Idella as "the perfect maid," Rawlings still viewed blacks as inferiors and never bridged the racial divide that separated her and Idella. Parker, with coauthor Keating, continues the story, begun in Idella (1992), of her 10-year stint--from 1940 to 1950--as cook and housekeeper for Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Though the Pulitzer Prize^-winning author referred to Parker as "the perfect maid," their relationship was often troubled. Rawlings was strong-minded and impatient, qualities made worse by her growing alcohol dependency. Though an unsophisticated observer--Parker admits she had never heard of most of the famous guests who routinely visited the Cross Creek home--she does convey a vivid sense of her employer as a person who could be thoughtful one moment and utterly exasperating the next. By including chapters on her early life as well as the years with Rawlings, Parker also conveys an unsettling sense of the black experience in the rural south of the 1920s and 1930s. It will be difficult for contemporary readers to understand Parker's nostalgia for her youth when "we respected the `Whites Only' signs." the rest of the story!!

An avid fan of Majorie Kinnan Rawlings, and the Cross Creek scrub country she lived in, this book about/by Idella will round out your image of their life there. The only other way to add to this would be a visit to Marjorie's home, now a state park but kept in the genre of when she lived there, in Cross Creek, to spend time taking the tour of it, and with that bringing the feel of what you read in hers and Idellas books into your vision!!!

Mary Keating, who worked patiently with Idella, in Reddick, obviously had a talent for bringing out the little details, and and able to put them into a visionary scope!!

If you like Cross Creek you will love Idella

I am African American and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings is one of my favorite authors. I loved Cross Creek and she is an excellent writer. However, I had to understand the times in which this book was written also I had to overlook demeaning remarks. If you can look pass these occasional remarks and see the dignity assigned to Martha Pickens and old Will, see the difference between truths and prejudices, relate to the author's life, you will enjoy Cross Creek. NOW, read Idella: Marjorie Rawlings' Perfect Maid and you won't be able to put it down. Miss Idella was a woman of her times and I felt I was reading about the lives of my grandmother, great grandmother and aunts. She gave me pieces of history left out by my relatives. I use to love for them to talk about their lives and the history and legacy given to me by them is priceless. Miss Idella wrote/told her story well and gave me a perspective I could relate to 100 percent. A must read!--full of pictures of her and her lovely family :)

Read "Cross Creek" First, Then Read What Rawlings Left Out ...

I loved this book. Idella greatly fleshes out and explains many of the indcidents in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings "Cross Creek" while adding her own perspectives that dovetail perfectly. Idella helps us have just a taste of what it meant to be a black housemaid in the South in the early 1930s. Especially insightful are the glimpses into the racism she endure from the white people she served- all along having to smile and remain silent. Idella was a proud and intelligent woman, who in one anecdote, told how she refused to mend Mrs. Rawlings's dress on her one day off- Sunday- a day that she always included church and socializing with friends.

My dad's uncle, Fred Tompkins, was a good friend of Marjorie Rawlings, and he is mentioned several times in her books- so I have a great interest in them.

About the Author
Galen Gruman is principal at The Zango Group, an editorial and marketing consulting firm, and senior editorial associate at BayCreative, a creative consultancy, as well as editorial director at EmergeMedia, publisher of IT Wireless. Currently a frequent contributor to SBS Digital Design, Macworld, CIO, and InfoWorld, he has also been editor of Macworld and M-Business, executive editor of Upside, West Coast bureau chief of Computerworld, and vice president of content for ThirdAge.com. He is coauthor of 18 other books on desktop publishing. Gruman led one of the first successful conversions of a national magazine to desktop publishing in 1986 and has covered publishing technology since then for several publications, including the trade weekly InfoWorld, for which he began writing in 1986, Macworld, whose staff he joined in 1991, and most recently SBS Digital Design. Originally a newspaper reporter in Los Angeles, Gruman got caught by the production-technology bug in 1979 and hasn’t recovered.

InDesign (the software) is great. This book is a waste of money

Over 900 utterly boring pages. I skimmed the first 150 pages and had to come to the conclusion that you cannot rely on the accuracy of this book. The author lists menus such as "File > Open..." and "explains" that ' "File > Open..." opens files.'. Wow, that was really the holy grail. The ultimate conclusion.

And "File > Print" prints a document... yeah. Sure. I wouldn't know otherwise. The options are listed, but not explained. Unless you are blind, you can see the options you have. I want a book which tells me what these options do, not how many they are. I don't need this kind of "help".

In a nutshell, this book is boring as boring can be. Wasted money. My advice: put your money elsewhere.

About the Author
Susan Wiley Hardwick is professor emeritus at the University of Oregon where she specializes in the geography of North America, urban and cultural geography, and the geography of immigration.� Susan has authored seven other books and dozens of articles and book chapters. She is a former President of the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) and has been involved in numerous national geography education initiatives, including The National Geography Standards, The Roadmap to Geography Project, and the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE).� She is perhaps best known as the co-host of “The Power of Place” an Annenberg geography series produced for public television.� She is the recipient of numerous grants and teaching and professional awards, including the statewide California Outstanding Professor Award, where she was selected out of more than 23,000 faculty when she taught at California at State University, Chico. She received her B.A. from Slippery Rock State University, her M.A. from California State University, and her PhD from University of California-Davis.

Fred M. Shelley is Professor of Geography and Graduate Liasion at the University of Oklahoma.� His research and teaching focuses on political geography, world systems, cultural geography, and North America geography. He has published ten books and over seventy scholarly articles.� He received his B.A. from Clark University, his M.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

Donald G. Holtgrieve is an adjunct professor of geography and environmental studies at the University of Oregon-Eugene.� He received his B.A. from San Diego State College, his M.A. from California State University Los Angeles., and his PhD from the University of Oregon-Eugene. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and has received a number of awards and grants.� He founded and headed an environmental research firm, coordinated projects for citizen environmental groups, and was a consulting urban planner for several state and local public agencies. He has worked as an inner-city high school teacher, reserve state fish and game warden, and land planner for sustainable development projects.

A great manual for any American citizen

Though this is a textbook, I read it primarily to learn more about the areas of this country and am very glad I did. Most of us Americans know amazingly little about the diverse regions of our nation, and are parochial fans of where we live. Hardwick's book is an important one because there are oddly almost no other textbooks on the adult/college level covering the geography of North America. The book divides the continent into 14 regions: the Atlantic periphery (northern New England and the far northeastern provinces of Canada), Quebec, Megalopolis (the urban stretch from Boston to Washington, D.C), the Great Lakes and Corn Belt, the Inland South, Coastal South, Great Plains, Rocky Mountain Region, Intermontane West, MexAmerica (the Southwest), California, Pacific Northwest, Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands, and the Far North (Canada, Alaska, Greenland).

Keep in mind that this is not at all just about physical geography, but a description of how daily life, leisure, jobs, ethnicity, and traditions (e.g., food, music) differ regionally. The abundant photos and maps make for important visual understanding. The chapters take up less than 400 pages, with important points given succinctly. There are additonal chapters on the history, politics, and environmental setting of the continent. The writing tends to be factual summaries of topics, but they are livened by boxes of information on specific topics, such as country music in the Inland South chapter or hockey and ethnic identity in the chapter on Quebec. Anyone reading this book will learn a great deal of useful information about the U.S. and Canada. I will stop short of saying it should be required reading for all Americans, but I'm tempted!

I'm frustrated with this textbook. I think it's ridiculously expensive, even compared to most textbooks considering the size. I'm glad I can rent, but it's expensive even then. My main problem with this book is the chapter questions. I have to answer every single chapter question from chapters 5-19 for my class and the questions are a mess. They don't go along in order of the chapter, so for example, the last question's answer may be located in the beginning of the chapter. This makes an already tedious, time consuming task more tedious and time consuming than it already is. Standing ovation to the writers for that, I really appreciate it.

I needed this book for a class, so I rented it. It arrived in good time and good condition. I am glad I was able to rent it, and didn't have to buy it. Thanks amazon for that! I love geography, but this book is a bit boring how it is written, in my opinion. There is a ton of information in it, a lot of history, but I found it to be not organized too well in many parts. I found it to be interesting in some areas, but like I said before, a bit boring.

As in the other Jungle Novels, Traven traces the beginnings of consciousness which ultimately led to the Mexican Revolution and the overthrow of the Díaz regime.

The mysterious B. Traven (1890–1969) was born in Chicago, spent his youth in Germany as an itinerant actor and revolutionary journalist, became a seaman on tramp steamers, settled in Mexico in the early 1920s, and began recording his experience in novels and stories. Young Indian trapped in system of brutality and exploitation

This is the third in a series of books written by Traven. They are usually called the Jungle Novels. In the first book; Government, there is a detailed explanation of the social and economic structure under the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. We see how Indian peon work on farms as serfs, always in dept to the large land owners. In some ways the first book reminded me of the books of Victor Hugo where he combines social science with novel.

In the second book; The Carreta, a young man makes his living traveling the roads of Mexico with an ox drawn cart full of goods owned by his master.

This third novel in the series is actually better than the first two in some ways. In the first novel, Traven gives a tremedous amount of social commentary, which is good, but the characters lack the cohesion and depth of a novel. In the second novel, a romance between Andres and a young runaway Indian girl becomes a marriage, but they experience one challenge after another in a system that is rigged against them.

In this third novel, Celso, a young Indian man who has assumed his father's debts and has gone to work in the mahogony plantations of Southern Mexico, must survive under the cruelest and most brutal of conditions. Celso is a more heroic character than characters in the first two novels. He is heroic in assuming his father's debts. He has a critical consciousness that allows him to make judgements about the system in which he is trapped. He begins to try to figure a way out of the system instead of resigning his fate to daily back breaking toil and death. The reader dearly wants him to escape. Therefore the reader becomes more emotionally involved in his struggel to escape from the man-destroying experiences of the Monteria, the mahogany plantations. Celso has a sense of justice and injustice that allows him to look beyond his personal circumstance and at the circumstances that entrap his people.

Superb Story of Exploitation

This superb novel is one of several "jungle books" by the author that describes exploitation and debt slavery among the impoverished Indians of Southern Mexico in the early 20th Century.

The story centers on Celso, an illiterate young Indian trying to earn enough money to buy a wife. Celso works two years on a ranch, only to lose most of his savings in a quasi-legal swindle. He then undertakes a dangerous trip into the jungle, and contracts to work in a jungle logging camp - called a Monteria. After two years of ceaseless labor on the Monteria he tries to return home with his savings to marry. Once again he is cheated, this time by an under-handed conspiracy involving agents, contractors, and the law. Celso then tries to adjust to his situation as he joins the forced march of fellow pseudo-slaves deep into the jungle to their new Monteria. Readers quickly identify with Celso as he attempts to control his life despite an unfair system that repeatedly cheats and abuses people like him.

Author B. Traven (1890-1969) wrote with great sympathy for the impoverished Indians of Mexico, as well as other exploited workers. Traven held leftist/anarchist views, and as usual, exposes the dark sides of human nature, racial bigotry, and capitalist exploitation.

Never See A Tree Just As A Tree Again!

This is a truly lovely book with an underlying sense of kindness and gentleness. We all know that trees are living entities, but we forget the gifts they offer us. And Sharlyn offers us a truly healing gift in her gentle, straightforward way of introducing us to these amazing beings that share their healing energies with us, not just their material gifts.

For those interested in historical and technical aspects of the spiritual journeys through the Celtic tree calendar, Sharlyn does a beautiful job of clearly and simply showing the relationship between the Celtic tree calendar, the ogham, totems, the runes, and Astrology. Her guided journeys take you to beautiful places and to beautiful beings, including your own ancestors, that bless, comfort and heal you.

At the end of the chapter on "Willow" Sharlyn writes, "I hope the Willow, in all her grace and power, will never be just another tree to you ever again!". Well I can truly say, no tree will ever be just another tree to me ever again.

In her introduction Sharlyn states, "If we can survive the next ten or fifteen years without blowing ourselves up an harming our planet beyond repair, our beliefs, behaviors, feelings, and actions will evolve and this may help to ensure our peace and harmony." Practical Spiritual Wisdom

I love this book! There is a Celtic tree for each calendar month and Sharlyn shares not only the healing properties of each tree but shares how
to really connect with these living beings. In a practical sense, she shows us many wise ways to connect to this wisdom. The Celtic rune system is mentioned, the healing properties of each tree and thoughts of how to journey with these powerful allies through art and dreamtime are inspiring and I can see that I shall be using and rereading this gem of a book for many years. Not only that, but the illustrations are beautiful, the entire experience is lovely. I am so excited to have this on my bookshelf and to share with my friends.

They give us so much more than the air we breathe

Sharlyn's book is beautiful--not only the drawings of the trees, but also the healing, generous sharing of the historical and her personal truths. I love the range of information, from meditations with the spirits of trees to how often to prune them. I start my day with the meditation for the tree appropriate for that month. As a result, each day, I feel a lovely, peaceful grounding, and a strong sense of oneness with the earth. I have purchased this book for friends, who, like me, love trees and gardening and pressing their toes in the earth. They love the book! I want to thank the author for this lovely gift. I'm eagerly awaiting her next publication.

Extraordinary

Be prepared to face a serious text on the subject of past-life research. Dr. Ian Stevenson is (was) a scientist who left no stone unturned in his investigations. The book presents three suggestive cases of former lives in great detail: people from different cultural backgrounds who could speak foreign languages when apparently regressed to a former life. What makes me an admirer of the author is his capacity to show the phenomena without preaching or tending towards any kind of religious affiliation. The hard cover edition I bought is in excelent condition and I not only have read it but have gone back many times to re-read it, always finding fascinating information. A "must have" for those who study reencarnation seriously. It is about time everybody gets more familiar with the fact!
