Kishonna L. Gray is an Assistant Professor in the School of Justice Studies at Eastern Kentucky University. She completed her Ph.D in Justice Studies at Arizona State University with a concentration in Media, Technology, & Culture. Her research and teaching interests incorporate an intersecting focus on marginalized identities (race, gender, class, sexuality, citizenship, etc.) and new media (online news forums, social media, virtual gaming communities). She has published in a variety of outlets, including Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media, & Technology; New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia; Crime, Media, Culture; the Bulletin of Science, Technology, & Society; Information, Communication, & Society; and the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication. Great book

Even though I have studied critical race theory, feminist theory and representation in game design, I still learned a lot about race and gender in online communities. Dr. Gray provides the context to understand how the default gamer is able to sit in the center of the gaming space, just as white men are aided in their efforts to sit at the top of American social institutions. More importantly, she outlines how women of color are not accepting attempts at marginalization. Dr. Gray has written an excellently researched volume on women gamers of color, that couldn't come soon enough for me. I look forward to reading more of her work.

The second, from 1850 to 1880, deals with the golden age of capitalism, the successful culmination of struggles for national unification, and the threat of anarchism. The concluding chapters look at the social and political stresses caused by socialism and national minorities, at new attempts by government to order society, imperial rivalry, and the descent into a war which was to mark the end of nineteenth-century Europe.
For this third edition, Dr Gildea has substantially revised the text and maps, and completely updated the bibliography. New introductory sections guide the reader through the wealth of material in each chapter. The new edition also includes a full chronology of the period, a list of leading state ministers, and family trees for all the major dynasties.

Very Good Book

I used this book for my class on Nineteenth Century Europe. We started in 1815 following the fall of Napoleon and ended on the verge of World War I. This is a very good book and it covers all the information on this very critical time period in European History. The Nineteenth Century came after the French Revolution and before the First World War and was much different from both the 18th and 20th centuries. Robert Gildea gives equal space to all countries including those which are often overlooked, including the Low Countries. The social, intellectual, and cultural history of Europe between 1800-1914 is presented in a very well written format. The information contained on Germany and France is very informative and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Modern European history.

May very well be the best one volume treatment...

This book may very well be the best one volume treatment of European history spanning the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of the Great War, but it is ridiculously dry and for all its breadth still comes up short (I believe the battle of Austerlitz gets the following treatment - "Napoleon smashed the Russian army at Austerlitz").

For a one volume serving it is adequate but even Gildea acknowledges that the scope if too large and he is right.

I have yet to come across a proper account of western European powers for the time period but I did come across an excellent south eastern European treatment by Charles and Barbara Jelavich. I'll keep on looking for a good counterpart to that work for the western nations but in the meantime I suppose this excruciatingly dry account will have to do.

Good coverage, dense text

As far as single-volume histories of 19th century Europe go, Gildea's _Barricades & Borders_ is probably the best available.

The book provides solid and sufficiently detailed coverage of the Continent's majors political and social events, though the century's fantastic artistic and cultural history is comes up short thanks, in large part, to the inclusion of only a few b&w illustrations.

Still, if you're looking for a comprehensive treatment of the age, you won't go wrong with this book.

Should have read this in college

I have been an art teacher for 10 years. I SO wish I had read this back in college. The toughest part of being an artist is finding creative ideas. This book gives a list of ways to alter ideas to make them original and creative. It also discusses ways of organizing artworks that go beyond the "golden mean". We forget, as creative people, that these skills don't come naturally to everyone. These creativity techniques should be taught and practiced by those that are learning to be creative! I really think working through these creativity methods would solve the problem of "everyone's project looks the same!"

Great subject, yet slightly difficult to read.

The Author has done a great job encouraging the reader to get out of their comfort zone and experiment in various approaches to art. I teach AP Art and plan to use some of his image development strategies to spur creative thinking for the subject they are exploring. Not as clear or easy to read as Bert Dodson's Drawing with Imagination. Although this was highly recommended to me as an AP teacher, I would opt for the Dodson book instead.

This book has a lot of big pictures and not a lot of writing - which I like. The writing that is there is high-quality and helpful. I'm a high school art teacher and it's one of the best design textbooks I've found. It's full of good-quality lesson ideas.
