About the Author
Manuel Molles received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He currently teaches at the University of New Mexico and is also Curator of Fishes and Aquatic Invertebrates. Dr. Molles has written and co-authored a number of publications on various ecology topics throughout his career, many of which he has presented at national and international conferences. Additionally, Dr. Molles was a Fulbright Scholar in Portugal.

Beware Pirated Books!

EDIT: Turns out I had a pirated book. I sent it back to Amazon and got a full refund. Make sure to look through your book when you get it, and if it matches the review I wrote below, you got a bad copy.

Here is my original review:

The first thing I have to say about this text is that the number of typos in it is absolutely appalling. For fun, I just went through a page and highlighted all the errors I found at first glance. I found 21 on one page. This book is blatantly unedited to the point where it distracts completely from the material. I honestly cannot remark on the quality of the material presented just because it is impossible for me to get into the concepts with all of the typos distracting me.
I thought maybe the author was foreign, and this would maybe allow me to forgive some of the errors. On the first page, in large bold print directly below the author's name it says the institution he teaches at "University of Mew Mexico." Not being able to spell the institution right makes me seriously doubt the material in the rest of the book.

To add to the typos, the book is of extremely low quality. The paper is low quality and after just a week of use the pages are beginning to fall out.

Bottom line: if you are assigned this book for a class, I hope you are good at overlooking typos or you will never be able to learn anything from this book. The author needs to learn to spell. Or at least get an editor who knows how.

Great foundational book for an introductory ecology course. Although my professor didn't use it often, it was a fantastic, in depth supplement with great charts and figures to visualize trends and examples.

Jenny's tips are very intuitive, so if you have been an admin of a facebook page for a while, you probably used a number of them. That being said, I still suggest that you take 25 minutes to read her tips.

Marci Alborghetti is a freelance writer and the author of fourteen books published over the past decade. Alborghetti and her husband Charlie are active together in Christian service and have founded and facilitated several reading groups; most recently The Saint James Literary Club, a book group started at the Saint James Homeless Shelter in New London, Connecticut.

Marci Alborghetti herself seems to have plunged into a full realm of Christian service, including serving meals and leading a book discussion group at a church-sponsored homeless shelter, and visiting and advocating for prisoners. Her passionate activity lends an air of authority to her writing. And yet her stated and obvious purpose is not to drag readers into service that is full-steam ahead, but to encourage or maybe exhort us to take small steps in the direction of ministry among the marginalized, either in our own neighborhoods or worldwide --- ministry that acknowledges a person's humanity and addresses personal temporal and spiritual needs.

She repeatedly nudges readers toward the stance that doing something is better than doing nothing. And she similarly says that prayer is foundational to service. "Service starts with prayer, particularly when we are uncertain about how --- or whether --- to take action. By praying, we prepare ourselves for the journey ahead. We accept that first sliver of grace. Sincere prayer doesn't take the place of action; it nourishes us for action."

Alborghetti's anecdotes, many of them written in the first person, lighten the prose. In the first chapter, she describes the scenario of a thief breaking into her third-floor apartment, mysteriously through a window. (Was Spiderman the thief? she muses.) She describes this as a transformational "wake-up call" to action. She didn't move out of the questionable neighborhood. She began praying for the thief, even when she saw a young woman on the street wearing a necklace she recognized as hers. And she gave "a portion of the insurance payment" to my "church programs assisting the poor." It was a small but significant beginning that led her on a journey of ministry among the poor that she'd "never have had the courage to deliberately choose."

Subsequent chapters deal with teaching children the importance of generosity (charitable giving) and community service; with paying attention to and choosing venues of service, including intentional kindnesses; with opening oneself to fiscal generosity; with seeking out personal mentors and parish-wide models for action; with serving in a nonjudgmental mode; with persevering through discouragements and bureaucratic dysfunctions; with accepting grace for the journey. Most chapters include biblical reflection and a brief sketch of a saint, biblical or more recent, whose life story and ministry illustrate the text. Chapters end with a psalm selection, an insightful prayer, questions for reflection or discussion, and "service suggestions."

Alborghetti's Catholic faith is evident in her language, her examples, and her discussion of local parish ministries. But her message is by no means parochial; it is applicable to a much broader readership, as exemplified by a short, warm afterword by Senator Joseph Lieberman, who adds a Jewish reflection on service.

Practical Advice for Living a Life of Service

What does it mean to practice Christian service? Do we really love Jesus if we ignore His frequent exhortation to service? How do we open ourselves to the God-given grace that makes service possible? These are the questions Marci Alborghetti sets out to answer in "A Willing Heart: How to Serve When You Think You Can't."

Jesus instructs us to "love our enemies." How can we possibly love someone we don't even like? Alborghetti states that "we must think of love as an act of will, an action we take and not a feeling that overwhelms us - a verb and not a noun. . . The best way to actually love is through service." Alborghetti goes on to explore the many forms that service can take and ways to make it a natural part of life.

Service can (and should) be a family activity. Children who see their parents engaging in service will soon incorporate it into their own lives. Prayer is an important form of service in itself. An easy way to begin incorporating service into one's life is to choose one person in need to pray for each day. Prayer also "strengthens and prepares us for active service."

We need to allow God to choose who we serve. While we may have inclinations about where we would like to serve, "we must follow where God leads us when it comes to service, even when we are uncertain about the results or have no expectation." God will both stretch our comfort zones as well as teach us valuable lessons. "No one is off-limits. We are not allowed to reject anyone."

Alborghetti also discusses how to cope when we are tired and worn out by service. She acknowledges the need to rest from time to time, but emphasizes that God will provide the grace we need to persevere.

"A Willing Heart" is full of inspiration and practical advice. It will help readers progress in their ability and willingness to serve.

I simply fell in love with this book

I simply fell in love with this book, after being introduced to this author on Instagram. The words that this author brings to paper, are the ones that normal people (like me and you) are unable to put into words even though we may be feeling and thinking about them. Reading this book made me feel like I had come home; that I had been given the privilege to meet with a like-minded mind, who really GETS you.
This book is brilliant.
If you are hesitating, just buy it.

Najwa just has a way with her words that articulates my inner feelings. The positivity and her outlook on many situations found in this book is enlightening and peaceful. It gives me a perspective of self confidence, self respect and that taking the higher road by doing the right thing can only do you good. I can't wait to see what else she has in store for her readers. Great read.

I wish my mom would've went through this with me.

Having been a follower of Luke and Trisha's blog I've watched with interest as they've released these books. The first in the series is for younger children and it left me thinking "what next?"

This book is next. The changes a child goes through in puberty are huge and even though it's a few years in the future I am already intimidated by the idea of my sons hitting puberty.

My husband isn't any more eager for it. We've both agreed that it's important to make body part words like penis, vulva, breasts etc common words and to not shame our children, but we weren't raised that way and have no clue how to go about talking with a child who is hitting puberty.
Like most kids we felt like that was "dirty talk" and didn't talk to our parents but other "bad kids" like us.

I am thrilled to have this book in my library. I've read through it and even though I think it could be a bit awkward, I can see myself reading through this with my sons. The language is simple, yet encourages discussion from your young teens. I honestly wish my mother would've had this to go through with me when I was going through puberty.

I love the biblical view here and the way God is glorified throughout the entire book. He made us with our unique and changing bodies and gave us sex as a gift one might say. I want my kids to realize that sex isn't a dirty word, but a "God word".

I recommend this for any parent who is feeling at loss on reaching out their their changing child.

A must-have for the Christian parent's home library

Changes is an extremely helpful book that guides parents and children in productive conversations about an often awkward topic. Instead of putting it off or diving in with too much too soon, parents can use Changes as a launching pad for ongoing conversation that is appropriate to their child's age and maturity level. I used it as a guide, reading it ahead of time so that I had the material in mind when conversations arose. When my kids get a little older, it can be a great script-like devotion or study. It includes scripture reading, discussion points, questions, prayer and more. Love that! The simple and natural approach provided in Changes, along with the focus on God's Word and marriage, makes it a must-have for any Christian parent's home library. (I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.)

Best sex ed. books on the market

As a mom of 15, I am always looking for simple and practical tools to teach my children everything they need to know in life. The Talk Changes is just that. This simple seven lesson handbook can help any parent successfully discuss the changes of puberty with their child. The thing I love the most about this book is that it is a Bible study. Every lesson is based on scripture and truth. I love the direct approach and the scientific data as well. This book is perfect for teaching your child one on one or it can be used as a family Bible study. I would recommend this book for every home. I can't wait until the final book in this series comes out in 2016.

Unbelievable Story

A must read to understand the history of injustice and inequality to American citizens, depriving them of civil rights and due process of law. I was one of those incarcerated in the concentration camps, about which this book reveals. I have moved on, but was shocked by the book's revelation of blatant discrimination and unconscionable behavior of the keepers of the camps toward innocent Japanese Americans. I am deeply saddened to learn of the fragility of American democracy and complete disregard of the American constitution.

At my age and imperfect eyesight, I just wish the book is available in large print.

Director Myer was Honored by the Japanese-American Community

Mr. Myer, in his own book, (which is highly recommended), specifically proclaims, explains, and proves that the 10 relocation camps under his responsibility were NOT "concentration," so the whole premise of the book is false and betrays the foregone conclusion of the author's agenda.

Quite the opposite, Mr. Myer, the former War Relocation Authority director, was presented with awards and dinners in his honor, after WWII, by the Japanese-American community, in APPRECIATION for his handling of the West Coast Defense Zone evacuees.

For those who want to research the true story (and not today's politically-correct agenda version of falsifying history), get the actual GPO (Government Printing Office) final reports of the WRA from 1946.

Goes Way, Way Beyond the Ridiculous Threshold

Last week when I posted my review of Outlander, I wondered whether it would be smart to press on with the series in one massive reading binge, or whether, due to their epic length and the difficult emotional content, it would be smarter to take them slowly... as if I could. A longstanding joke in my family is that I was absent the day they handed out will power, and sure enough, even as I knew it would probably be too much for me emotionally, I devoured Dragonfly in Amber and then Voyager. And maybe it was too much of a good thing, or maybe it was just that I hit a wall and had no more empathy to waste on Jamie and Claire and their endless trevails, but I reached a point midway in this book where I just could not willingly suspend my disbelief anymore.

I'm not sure what happened. Having finished Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, I was already well used to the endless cycle of Jamie and/or Claire finding themselves in mortal peril with no way out, only they do get out, celebrate their narrow escape with sexy times, and then shortly find themselves in mortal peril again. I'd suspended my disbelief quite a bit, and was just enjoying the ride.

Back in December 2011, the DBSA Romance Fiction Podcast (hosted by Sarah Wendell of Smart B****es, Trashy Books and Jane Litte of Dear Author) had an episode about the Ridiculousness Threshold -- that point at which the reader can no longer accept character or plot insanity and no longer enjoys the book. For me, I hit the Ridiculousness Threshold the moment Laoghaire's daughter walks in on Jamie and Claire at Lallybroch and calls him "Daddy!"

After that, no matter how I tried, I could not silence my inner skeptic. Almost every twist and turn of the convoluted plot made me roll my eyes and think, "Oh, for pete's sake, seriously?" The entire rest of the book is one absolutely ridiculous coincidence after another, and even in a series where I was willing to believe in time travel and the main characters' repeated skin-of-the-teeth survival against all odds, I just could not believe in pirates and slasher-killers and secret babies and zombies and shipwrecks and all of the rest of the insanity writ large over the 870 pages of this book.

And you know, the worst of it is that even though I'm totally done, and can't shut up my inner critic enough to enjoy reading, I still want to know what happens to Jamie and Claire next. Maybe I can find some Cliffs Notes.

A Long Voyage

I found myself growing exceedingly bored by Jamie, Claire and their unlikely antics by the time I was less than halfway through the book. Unlike the first two books in the series, in which events, though unlikely, are at least interesting, the events in this book are preposterous beyond belief. I found myself skimming pages, then skipping sections all together as I found myself confronted with yet another impossible schematic. Gabaldon seems to have tried just a bit too hard to tie in incidents from early American history to fit with the unlikely story line, and I for one am skeptical. I will read the next book in the series to see if she can get back in the groove, but if this one proves as disappointing as the last, I will move on to books more worthy of my time.

Ach! Not again . . .

As far as historical romance goes, its a good one. Once again i was sucked into a vortex of 1100 pages worth of drama, fantasy, danger, romance, and oh a little history sprinkled in. Gabaldon is nothing if not an engaging storyteller. But if you don't have a lot of time on your hands to keep track of multiple story lines that flimsily twine together, you might become more irritated than entranced.

Like book 1, and book 2, I completely disappeared in Voyager while I read it. I'm a fan of science fiction, so I can appreciate themes like time travel, water horses, and magic. Gabaldon's work is fabulous storytelling.

If you haven't read the book already and don't like spoilers, stop reading :o)

As the third in this series, I have to admit I've become sometimes confused, if not outright frustrated with the myriad plot lines, or better yet, lack of depth, in Voyager. There was just too much going on, and not enough circling back to explain, make a point, or satisfy the need to 'know' the characters. A few things that left me saying 'Ach'! Or is it 'Och'?

1) when Claire returns to the 1700's, the reunion with Jamie was disappointing, pretty low key in fact, and didn't deliver on emotion. And as soon as they are reunited -- there is a fire, a murder, news of a serial killer, and then another murder during a smuggling raid. When are they going to connect? As it turns out, pretty much never -- or at least not in a satisfying way.

2) the story line with the marriage to Laogohaire was beyond disappointing; Claire from the first two books would have told Jamie about the attempted murder. This plot line felt false, from Claire's reaction and silence, to Jenny's betrayal, to Jamie's being shot, to Laogohaire's lack of sexual interest in Jamie (um, isn't he so verra sexually attractive to everyone else he encounters in the book?)

3) I became weary encountering tragedy after tragedy with the pair throughout their journey. I wanted to hurry through sections to move on to the 'story' about Jamie and Claire's reuniting. Like I said in point 1, it doesn't really happen. Rather than delve deep, like when they spent their first night, or had to say good-bye, bits of their reconciliation were sprinkled here and there amidst being taken captive, thrown overboard, surviving a hurricane, and meeting up (coincidence!) with another of Jamie's besotted English officers

4) how did Jamie become the leader of French troops? it was very odd this was never explained, and even more odd that he and these frenchmen - who we never head of again - took over the ship

5) granted the world was smaller then, but it doesn't work when every single new character we encounter (with the exception of Willoughby) has a prior relationship, or a future one for that matter, with Jamie or Claire

Gabaldon had Claire voice the idea that nothing should be cut from a novel if its important to the story line. Agreed. At the same time, too many coincidences, mishaps, and unexplained events can equal a rough ride as a reader.

All that being said, I loved the book in the sense that it drew me in, and took me somewhere else for a few hours every day. And in the end, that's what a good book does! But I hope some of these points have already been addressed in book 4 -- I won't be able to skip it. As a resident of South Carolina, I just have to know ...

Best quality

I saw this book mentioned on a subreddit about Hoverboards when I was trying to figure out how to fix my broken scooter. It peaked my interest
and was on free promo so gave it a download. I have to say I was very impressed and am very motivated to get started making money on this niche. I don't really have any cash to buy up inventory at the moment but the book also touched on how one can get started for free just posting affiliate links online or by getting connected with a drop shipper. I just signed up for an Amazon, eBay and Ali Express affiliate program. As soon as they approve my application and give me my links I'm going to get rolling. I'm also intrigued about repairing hoverboards locally on local classifieds like craigslist as I have gotten pretty good at doing repair just on my board and friends boards so may try to turn it into an income.

Great intro to get into the space!

This book is exactly what I was looking for! I was interested to learn more about hoverboards after hearing about them all over the news and my brother owns one. I will admit they are much harder to ride than I imagined! This is a great read if you're looking try to profit from this growing market and this is exactly what I was looking for to get started. This is a must read to learn more about the history, market potential and so much more for interested entrepreneurs.

About the Author

Mary Ann Suppes brings an unusual breadth of teaching, practice, and professional experience to the writing of The Social Work Experience. She is currently a professor of social work at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she has served as chair of the social work department for many years. She has provided curriculum consultation to numerous colleges and universities. She holds membership in the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD), the National Association of Social Workers, and the Wisconsin Council on Social Work Education. She served for many years on the CSWE Commission on Accreditation and also served several terms as a member of the board of directors of BPD. She currently chairs the BPD Social Work Education Continuum Committee. She has also been treasurer of the Wisconsin Council on Social Work Education and has chaired numerous accreditation site visits for CSWE. Mary Ann Suppes received both her undergraduate and graduate (MSW) degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and did postgraduate work at the University of Chicago.

Carolyn Cressy Wells is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She previously taught social work at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Academy of Certified Social Workers, and has served on a number of accreditation site teams for the Council on Social Work Education. She is author of three other social work texts: Social Work Day to Day: The Experience of Generalist Social Work Practice; Social Work Ethics Day to Day: Guidelines for Professional Practice; and Stepping to the Dance: The Training of a Family Therapist. She is a Certified Music Practitioner and provides harp music at bedside for a local hospice; she also conducts workshops on Spirituality, Science and Healing. She received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley and an MSSW and Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Relationships from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Book for a class in social work

So I was forced to buy this book for a class that I'm taking. Most of us feel the same about textbooks...*yawns*. I have to say this textbook does give you a lot of information but it also has a lot of stories from case studies and anecdotal. It makes the textbook a more interesting read and really personalizes the study material and gives it a face.

Pleasantly surprised that I can enjoy reading this textbook as compared to most textbooks that serve as a sleep aid for me.

VERY POLITICALLY BIAS

The author needs to tone back her personal opinions on politics. Not every person going into Social work agrees on the same politics. While reading this (for class) I felt as though I were being lead what to believe and vote a certain way simply because the author was COMPLETELY one-sided. Phrases like "unfortunately Bush was elected into presidency..." and "Thank goodness for president Obama..." Phrases like this are scattered throughout the entire book with no holding back on how the author feels. If this is suppose to be an educational book- take out the bias and just present the facts. Terrible book-most everybody in my class agreed with me as well- way too political and not educational. Also-there is NO glossary for words that are bolded. Sometimes there aren't even definitions for words that are in bold. The layout of the book and the Titles are also very misleading and confusing. I cant believe this book is being used at a university. I learned nothing.
